Returning Red-Handed: Blood, Yechezkel, and the Potential for Teshuva

What is up with the emphasis on blood in this book? Is our blood a good thing or a bad thing?

(6) When I passed by you and saw you wallowing in your blood, I said to you: “Live in [spite of] your blood.” Yea, I said to you: “Live in [spite of] your blood.”

So, maybe bad?

(9) I bathed you in water, and washed the blood off you, and anointed you with oil.
(7) For the blood she shed is still in her; She set it upon a bare rock; She did not pour it out on the ground To cover it with earth.
Or... maybe good? Potentially?

(1) downtrodden Heb. מִתְבּוֹסֶסֶת, downtrodden, as (Ps. 60:14): “and He will trample (יָבוּס) our adversaries.” (2) With your blood, live Even with this loathsomeness of yours you shall not die. He repeats this a second time because they were redeemed with the blood of the Passover sacrifice and the blood of circumcision (Pirke d’Rabbi Eliezer, chapter 29).

(22) In all your abominations and harlotries, you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, and lay wallowing in your blood.

(1) And He said to me, “O mortal, stand up on your feet that I may speak to you.”

(לא) וְאַתֵּ֥ן צֹאנִ֛י צֹ֥אן מַרְעִיתִ֖י אָדָ֣ם אַתֶּ֑ם אֲנִי֙ אֱלֹ֣קֵיכֶ֔ם נְאֻ֖ם אדושם ה'׃ {פ}

(31) For you, My flock, flock that I tend, are men; and I am your God—declares the Lord GOD.
Or neither, inherently. Stop obsessing over blood.

(יג) בְּאׇמְרִ֤י לַצַּדִּיק֙ חָיֹ֣ה יִֽחְיֶ֔ה וְהֽוּא־בָטַ֥ח עַל־צִדְקָת֖וֹ וְעָ֣שָׂה עָ֑וֶל כׇּל־צִדְקֹתָו֙ לֹ֣א תִזָּכַ֔רְנָה וּבְעַוְל֥וֹ אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֖ה בּ֥וֹ יָמֽוּת׃ (יד) וּבְאׇמְרִ֥י לָרָשָׁ֖ע מ֣וֹת תָּמ֑וּת וְשָׁב֙ מֵֽחַטָּאת֔וֹ וְעָשָׂ֥ה מִשְׁפָּ֖ט וּצְדָקָֽה... (טז) כׇּל־חַטֹּאתָו֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָטָ֔א לֹ֥א תִזָּכַ֖רְנָה ל֑וֹ מִשְׁפָּ֧ט וּצְדָקָ֛ה עָשָׂ֖ה חָי֥וֹ יִֽחְיֶֽה׃ (יז) וְאָֽמְרוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י עַמְּךָ֔ לֹ֥א יִתָּכֵ֖ן דֶּ֣רֶךְ אדושם וְהֵ֖מָּה דַּרְכָּ֥ם לֹא־יִתָּכֵֽן׃ ...(כ) ... אִ֧ישׁ כִּדְרָכָ֛יו אֶשְׁפּ֥וֹט אֶתְכֶ֖ם בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ {פ}

(10) Now, O mortal, say to the House of Israel: This is what you have been saying: “Our transgressions and our sins weigh heavily upon us; we are sick at heart about them. How can we survive?” (11) Say to them: As I live—declares the Lord GOD—it is not My desire that the wicked shall die, but that the wicked turn from his [evil] ways and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways, that you may not die, O House of Israel!... (13) When I say of the righteous “He shall surely live,” and, relying on his righteousness, he commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but for the iniquity that he has committed he shall die. (14) So, too, when I say to the wicked, “You shall die,” and he turns back from his sinfulness and does what is just and right... (16) None of the sins that he committed shall be remembered against him; since he does what is just and right, he shall live. (17) Your fellow countrymen say, “The way of the Lord is unfair.” But it is their way that is unfair!... (20)... I will judge each one of you according to his ways, O House of Israel!

(24) O mortal, those who live in these ruins in the land of Israel argue, “Abraham was but one man, yet he was granted possession of the land. We are many; surely, the land has been given as a possession to us.” (25) Therefore say to them: Thus said the Lord GOD: You eat with the blood, you raise your eyes to your fetishes, and you shed blood—yet you expect to possess the land!

Return and Renewal: Reflections on Teshuva and Spiritual Growth, R' Aharon Lichtenstein, p13
Teshuva is the chance to redress the balance, to take all of that waste and not only neutralize it but energize it, even transforming it into a positive force... Where teshuva is properly experienced, even “intentional sins are counted as merits” (Yoma 86b)... Teshuva is the opportunity to bring back all that we missed, to confront the torment and amend the failure. Ultimately, it allows us to restructure and rebuild our lives, and perhaps even more, when teshuva is performed out of love, to build upon our failure, our waste, and our diminishing of the divine stature.
