Rewards for the Commandments
And if you do obey these rules and observe them carefully, then Adonai your God will maintain faithfully for you the covenant that God made on oath with your ancestors:
God will favor you and bless you and multiply you; God will bless the issue of your womb and the produce of your soil, your new grain and wine and oil, the calving of your herd and the lambing of your flock, in the land that God swore to your ancestors to assign to you.
You shall be blessed above all other peoples: there shall be no sterile male or female among you or among your livestock.
Adonai will ward off from you all sickness; God will not bring upon you any of the dreadful diseases of Egypt, about which you know, but will inflict them upon all your enemies.
(8) Keep, therefore, all the Instruction that I enjoin upon you today, so that you may have the strength to enter and take possession of the land that you are about to cross into and possess, (9) and that you may long endure upon the soil that Adonai swore to your ancestors to assign to them and to their heirs, a land flowing with milk and honey.
And now, O Israel, what does Adonai your God demand of you? Only this: to revere Adonai, to walk only in God's paths, to love Adonai, and to serve your God with all your heart and soul, keeping God’s commandments and laws, which I enjoin upon you today, for your good.
"The 'keeping' is not for free, but rather 'for your good' - in order that you may receive a reward." (Rashi on Deut. 10:13)
If, then, you obey the commandments that I enjoin upon you this day, loving Adonai and serving God with all your heart and soul, I will grant the rain for your land in season, the early rain and the late. You shall gather in your new grain and wine and oil — I will also provide grass in the fields for your cattle — and thus you shall eat your fill.
“One should not say: ‘Behold, I will study in order to become rich,’ or ‘in order to be called “Rabbi,”’ or ‘in order to receive a reward.’ Instead, one should do everything out of love, and the honor [some manuscripts read: “the reward”] will come in the end.” (Rashi on Deut. 11:13)
