The Wilderness Experience (Portion Ekev)
Lawrence Kushner, Honey from the Rock: Wilderness is not just a desert through which we wondered for forty years. It is a way of being. A place that demands being open to the flow of life around you. A place that demands being honest with yourself without regard to the cost in personal anxiety. A place that demands being present with all of yourself. In the wilderness your possessions cannot surround you. Your preconceptions cannot protect you. Your logic cannot promise you the future. Your guilt can no longer place you safely in the past. You are left alone each day with an immediacy that astonishes, chastens, and exults. You see the world as if for the first time.

(1) You shall faithfully observe all the Instruction that I enjoin upon you today, that you may thrive and increase and be able to possess the land that the Holy One promised on oath to your ancestors. (2) Remember the long way that Adonai your God has made you travel in the wilderness these past forty years, to test you by hardships to learn what was in your hearts: whether you would keep God's commandments or not. (3) God subjected you to the hardship of hunger and then gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your ancestors had ever known, in order to teach you that person does not live on bread alone, but may live on anything that the Holy One decrees. (4) The clothes upon you did not wear out, nor did your feet swell these forty years.
