(ח) הִגִּ֥יד לְךָ֛ אָדָ֖ם מַה־טּ֑וֹב וּמָֽה־יְהֹוָ֞ה דּוֹרֵ֣שׁ מִמְּךָ֗ כִּ֣י אִם־עֲשׂ֤וֹת מִשְׁפָּט֙ וְאַ֣הֲבַת חֶ֔סֶד וְהַצְנֵ֥עַ לֶ֖כֶת עִם־אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ {ס}
(8) “He has told you, O man, what is good, And what the LORD requires of you: Only to do justice And to love goodness, And to walk modestly with your God;
וְהַיְינוּ דְּאָמַר רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר מַאי דִּכְתִיב הִגִּיד לְךָ אָדָם מַה טּוֹב וּמָה ה׳ דּוֹרֵשׁ מִמְּךָ כִּי אִם עֲשׂוֹת מִשְׁפָּט וְאַהֲבַת חֶסֶד וְהַצְנֵעַ לֶכֶת עִם אֱלֹהֶיךָ עֲשׂוֹת מִשְׁפָּט זֶה הַדִּין וְאַהֲבַת חֶסֶד זוֹ גְּמִילוּת חֲסָדִים וְהַצְנֵעַ לֶכֶת עִם אֱלֹהֶיךָ זוֹ הוֹצָאַת הַמֵּת וְהַכְנָסַת כַּלָּה לַחוּפָּה וַהֲלֹא דְּבָרִים קַל וָחוֹמֶר וּמָה דְּבָרִים שֶׁדַּרְכָּן לַעֲשׂוֹתָן בְּפַרְהֶסְיָא אָמְרָה תּוֹרָה הַצְנֵעַ לֶכֶת דְּבָרִים שֶׁדַּרְכָּן לַעֲשׂוֹתָן בְּצִנְעָא עַל אַחַת כַּמָּה וְכַמָּה
And this is what Rabbi Elazar said: What is the meaning of that which is written: “It has been told you, O man, what is good, and what the Lord does require of you; only to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8)? “To do justly”; this is justice. “To love mercy”; this is acts of kindness. “To walk humbly with your God”; this is referring to taking the indigent dead out for burial and accompanying a poor bride to her wedding canopy, both of which must be performed without fanfare. The Gemara summarizes: And are these matters not inferred a fortiori? If, with regard to matters that tend to be conducted in public, as the multitudes participate in funerals and weddings, the Torah says: Walk humbly, then in matters that tend to be conducted in private, e.g., giving charity and studying Torah, all the more so should they be conducted privately.
כְּתִיב, וְהַצְנֵעַ לֶכֶת עִם אֱלֹהֶיךָ. לְפִיכָךְ צָרִיךְ הָאָדָם לִהְיוֹת צָנוּעַ בְּכָל אָרְחוֹתָיו. וְלָכֵן כְּשֶׁלּוֹבֵשׁ אוֹ פּוֹשֵׁט אֶת חֲלוּקוֹ אוֹ שְׁאָר בֶּגֶד שֶׁעַל בְּשָׂרוֹ, יְדַקְדֵּק מְאֹד שֶׁלֹּא לְגַלּוֹת אֶת גּוּפוֹ, אֶלָּא יַלְבִּישׁוֹ וְיַפְשִׁיטוֹ כְּשֶׁהוּא שׁוֹכֵב עַל מִשְׁכָּבוֹ מְכֻסֶּה. וְאַל יֹאמַר הִנְנִי בְחַדְרֵי חֲדָרִים וּבַחֲשֵׁכָה מִי רוֹאֵנִי, כִּי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְלֹא כָל הָאָרֶץ כְּבוֹדוֹ, וְכַחֲשֵׁכָה כָּאוֹרָה לְפָנָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ שְׁמוֹ. וְהַצְּנִיעוּת וְהַבֹּשֶׁת, מְבִיאוֹת אֶת הָאָדָם לִידֵי הַכְנָעָה לְפָנָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ שְׁמוֹ (סִימָן ב').
It is written: "You shall walk modestly with your God." It is therefore necessary to be modest in all your ways. Thus when putting on or removing your shirt or any other garment from your body you should be very careful not to uncover your body. You should put on and remove the garment while lying in bed under a cover. You should not say: "I am in a private, and dark place." "Who will see me?" Because the Holy One, Blessed is He, Whose glory fills the entire world [sees] and to Him darkness is like light, Blessed be His Name. Modesty and shame bring a person to submissiveness before Him, Blessed be His name.

בהצנע לכת כי זה יורה על כניעתך שלא תחמוד כבוד על מעשיך הנכבדים אף כי על המעלות אשר לא יחפוץ בהם היוצר [מן] יצוריו. כי אין להתהלל בהם. כמו העושר והגבורה וממיני החכמות. זולתי השכל וידוע את הש"י כמו שנאמר (ירמיהו ט׳:כ״ב) אל יתהלל חכם בחכמתו וגו':

"and to walk humbly with your God" - this is the essence of your submission and your subordination: To serve God with humility. For this shows your submission, that you do not desire honor for your honorable actions, nor for the virtues that the Maker does not [even] desire in His creations - for one should not glory in them - such as wealth and strength and types of wisdom, but rather only for understanding and knowing God, may He be blessed, as it is stated (Jeremiah 9:22), "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, etc."
