L'Shana Tovah Umetukah: To a Good and Sweet New Year
L'shana tovah umetukah - to a good and sweet new year! This is the blessing we bestow upon each other every year during the holiday of Rosh Hashana. We hope for both a good and a sweet new year, not just one or the other. As we move through these texts together we will explore the characteristics of goodness and sweetness by zooming in on an iconic Rosh Hashana treat - Honey! We will ask ourselves what makes something good? What makes something sweet? Can something be too sweet? How will we imbue our lives with goodness and sweetness in 5782?

A Good and Spacious Land

וָאֵרֵ֞ד לְהַצִּיל֣וֹ ׀ מִיַּ֣ד מִצְרַ֗יִם וּֽלְהַעֲלֹתוֹ֮ מִן־הָאָ֣רֶץ הַהִוא֒ אֶל־אֶ֤רֶץ טוֹבָה֙ וּרְחָבָ֔ה אֶל־אֶ֛רֶץ זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָ֑שׁ אֶל־מְק֤וֹם הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ וְהַ֣חִתִּ֔י וְהָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י וְהַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃

I have come down to rescue them from the Egyptians and to bring them out of that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey, the region of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

זבת חלב ודבש רבת המקנה ורבת המזון, ערב ומועיל, כאמרו אכול דבש בני כי טוב, ונפת מתוק:

זבת חלב ודבש, a land with much livestock and abundant food of good quality and of nourishing properties (honey). These terms are used in this sense in Proverbs 24,13 אכול בני דבש כי טוב ונפת מתוק. “My son, eat honey for it is good, and the honeycomb for it is sweet on your palate.”

Rabbi Ovadiah Sforno was a 16th-century Italian rabbi and physician. This text is his commentary on Exodus 3:8:2.

A Land of Honey

(כ) כִּֽי־אֲבִיאֶ֜נּוּ אֶֽל־הָאֲדָמָ֣ה ׀ אֲשֶׁר־נִשְׁבַּ֣עְתִּי לַאֲבֹתָ֗יו זָבַ֤ת חָלָב֙ וּדְבַ֔שׁ וְאָכַ֥ל וְשָׂבַ֖ע וְדָשֵׁ֑ן וּפָנָ֞ה אֶל־אֱלֹהִ֤ים אֲחֵרִים֙ וַעֲבָד֔וּם וְנִ֣אֲצ֔וּנִי וְהֵפֵ֖ר אֶת־בְּרִיתִֽי׃

(20) When I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey that I promised on oath to their ancestors, and they eat their fill and grow fat and turn to other gods and serve them, spurning Me and breaking My covenant,

A Word of Caution

(טז) דְּבַ֣שׁ מָ֭צָאתָ אֱכֹ֣ל דַּיֶּ֑ךָּ פֶּן־תִּ֝שְׂבָּעֶ֗נּוּ וַהֲקֵֽאתֽוֹ׃

(16) If you find honey, eat only what you need, Lest, surfeiting yourself, you throw it up.

There IS Something Better Than Honey

הַֽנֶּחֱמָדִ֗ים מִ֭זָּהָב וּמִפַּ֣ז רָ֑ב וּמְתוּקִ֥ים מִ֝דְּבַ֗שׁ

[The Torah is] more desirable than gold, than much fine gold; sweeter than honey

Better... Or Maybe Just The Same

(ג) זֶהוּ שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב (שיר השירים א, ג): לְרֵיחַ שְׁמָנֶיךָ טוֹבִים, רַבָּנָן אָמְרֵי בַּחֲמִשָּׁה דְבָרִים נִמְשְׁלָה הַתּוֹרָה, בְּמַיִם, וּבְיַיִן, וּבִדְּבַשׁ, וּבְחָלָב, וּבְשָׁמֶן...בִּדְבַשׁ וּבְחָלָב מִנַּיִן (שיר השירים ד, יא): דְּבַשׁ וְחָלָב תַּחַת לְשׁוֹנֵךְ...

Concerning that which the verse says, "Your ointments have a good fragrance", the Rabbis said that the Torah is compared with five things: Water, wine, honey, milk and oil...Where do we see it compared to honey and milk? "Honey and milk under your tongue" [i.e. this alludes to Torah].

מה שכתוב ״ומתוקים מדבש״, כי ידוע שיש בטבע כח המתיקות גדול...
עד שאם יפול בה איזה דבר לחם או בשר...במשך הזמן יתהפך הלחם והבשר לדבש...
וזהו שאמר הכתוב שכח מתיקות התורה הוא גדול הרבה יותר מדבש...
אפילו אם טבע נפשו היה מתחילה רע מאד, כח התורה מטהרתו ומקדישו ונהפך להיות איש אחר ממש.

And why does the text say "sweeter than honey?" Because it is known that in nature there exists a power to honey, that if an item like bread or wine falls into it, eventually they will transform into honey.
And that is why the Torah describes the power of Torah as stronger than that of honey...
Even if the person's nature was inherently evil, Torah turns them to be an entirely different person.
