Some Jews were able to return from Persia and rebuild the Temple. Jewish life in Israel was stable for a while, even once the Greeks conquered the land. But then King Achashverosh put a stop to many Jewish practices, like eating kosher and studying Torah. He even put a pig in the rebuilt Holy Temple.
- Read the 2nd chapter of the non-Tanakh text called "The Book of Maccabees."
- Locate the verse in which Mattathias calls upon the people of Modiin to fight back against the Greek laws, saying, "Whosoever is zealous of the law, and maintaineth the covenant, let him follow me."
