What do we learn about the energy it takes to "receive Torah" and gain understandings from this passage in the Talmud?
When have you been most "up" about your Judaism and Jewish connections?
How does going up and coming down play out in Jewish life today? For you?
How is the Torah a gift to humanity?
Link major ideas of Western civilization to ideas and laws found in the Torah - charity, court systems and rule of law, rights to a national heritage, etc.
The Gemara cites additional homiletic interpretations on the topic of the revelation at Sinai. The Torah says, “And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the lowermost part of the mount” (Exodus 19:17). Rabbi Avdimi bar Ḥama bar Ḥasa said: the Jewish people actually stood beneath the mountain, and the verse teaches that the Holy One, Blessed be He, overturned the mountain above the Jews like a tub, and said to them: If you accept the Torah, excellent, and if not, there will be your burial. Rav Aḥa bar Ya’akov said: From here there is a substantial caveat to the obligation to fulfill the Torah. The Jewish people can claim that they were coerced into accepting the Torah, and it is therefore not binding. Rava said: Even so, they again accepted it willingly in the time of Ahasuerus, as it is written: “The Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them” (Esther 9:27), and he taught: The Jews ordained what they had already taken upon themselves through coercion at Sinai.
What does "accepted the Torah" mean in this context? Why do you think the Jewish People resisted accepting the Torah?
Why does God give us free will and allow us to resist Torah's demands of us?
How does something being "held over our heads" sometimes work to our benefit?

"Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth." Rabbi Yochanan said: At Mount Sinai, an angel carried all of the commandments from the Holy One to the Israelites one by one. The angels approached each Jewish soul and said: "Will you take on this commandment? These are the details of the mitzvah, and these are the punishments if you don't follow it, and these are the rewards for following it." The person would answer, "Yes! I accept it!" The angel would then say, "Do you accept the divinity of the Holy One of blessing?" and each person answered, "Yes! yes!" And then the angel kissed the person on the mouth. A different interpretation: The commandment itself went to each and every one of the Israelites and said, "Will you follow me? These are the details...the rewards...the punishments..." The soul would reply, "Yes! yes!" and straightaway the commandment kissed the person on the mouth.
How does this version of revelation at Sinai differ from the passage just above it from the Talmud Shabbat 88a?
Think of another way to personify the commandments. Create a dialogue between any given commandment and yourself. What will get you to say, "Yes! yes!"?
If you could speak with any mitzvah or a number of them, which of them would you want to meet and talk to? which would you want to kiss!?
