Wise Ones - Likrat Shabbat (Vayak'hel Pekudei HaChodesh) 2021

What can it mean to be 'wise'?

Skill - Making the Mishkan (Vayak'hel - Pekudei)

(10) And let all among you who are skilled come and make all that the LORD has commanded: (11) the Tabernacle, its tent and its covering, its clasps and its planks, its bars, its posts, and its sockets;

(21) And everyone who excelled in ability and everyone whose spirit moved him came, bringing to the LORD his offering for the work of the Tent of Meeting and for all its service and for the sacral vestments. ...(25) And all the skilled women spun with their own hands, and brought what they had spun, in blue, purple, and crimson yarns, and in fine linen. (26) And all the women who excelled in that skill spun the goats’ hair.

(30) And Moses said to the Israelites: See, the LORD has singled out by name Bezalel, son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. (31) He has endowed him with a divine spirit of skill, ability, and knowledge in every kind of craft (32) and has inspired him to make designs for work in gold, silver, and copper,

(11) A woman giving birth is surely in mortal danger when she bends down to give birth, and [so] we profane the Shabbat for her. We call a learned midwife from one place to [another] place and we cut the umbilical cord and tie it. ...

Astronomy - Rosh Chodesh (Parashat HaChodesh)

(1) The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: (2) This month shall mark for you the beginning of the months; it shall be the first of the months of the year for you.

(5) See, I have imparted to you laws and rules, as the LORD my God has commanded me, for you to abide by in the land that you are about to enter and occupy. (6) Observe them faithfully, for that will be proof of your wisdom and discernment to other peoples, who on hearing of all these laws will say, “Surely, that great nation is a wise and discerning people.”

Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi said that Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said in the name of bar Kappara: Anyone who knows how to calculate astronomical seasons and the movement of constellations and does not do so, the verse says about him: “They do not take notice of the work of God, and they do not see His handiwork” (Isaiah 5:12). And Rabbi Shmuel bar Naḥmani said that Rabbi Yoḥanan said: From where is it derived that there is a mitzva incumbent upon a person to calculate astronomical seasons and the movement of constellations? As it was stated: “And you shall guard and perform, for it is your wisdom and understanding in the eyes of the nations” (Deuteronomy 4:6). What wisdom and understanding is there in the Torah that is in the eyes of the nations, i.e., appreciated and recognized by all? You must say: This is the calculation of astronomical seasons and the movement of constellations, as the calculation of experts is witnessed by all.

Wisdom of Counselors

(18) They said, “Come let us devise a plot against Jeremiah—for instruction shall not fail from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor oracle from the prophet. Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and we shall no longer have to listen to all those words of his.”

(14) A wise man has his eyes in his head, Whereas a fool walks in darkness. But I also realized that the same fate awaits them both.

(1) Ben Zoma said:Who is wise? He who learns from every man, as it is said: “From all who taught me have I gained understanding” (Psalms 119:99). ...

Wisdom and Faith

(6) Do you thus requite the LORD, O dull and witless people? Is not He the Father who created you, Fashioned you and made you endure!

Wisdom as knowledge of Oral Torah

(4) Yose ben Yoezer (a man) of Zeredah and Yose ben Yohanan [a man] of Jerusalem received [the oral tradition] from them [i.e. Shimon the Righteous and Antigonus]. Yose ben Yoezer used to say: let thy house be a house of meeting for the Sages and sit in the very dust of their feet, and drink in their words with thirst.

The Netziv combines Faith and Knowledge of Torah in his view of "Chochmah"

(1) All those who are wise in heart. This included not only scholars but all who feared Heaven. If they would come to participate in the making of the Tabernacle, Hashem would assist them even if they had never learned a skilled craft prior to this.

Wisdom Personified

(1) It is Wisdom calling, Understanding raising her voice. (2) She takes her stand at the topmost heights, By the wayside, at the crossroads, (3) Near the gates at the city entrance; At the entryways, she shouts, (4) “O men, I call to you; My cry is to all mankind.

(22) “The LORD created me at the beginning of His course As the first of His works of old. (23) In the distant past I was fashioned, At the beginning, at the origin of earth. (24) There was still no deep when I was brought forth, No springs rich in water; (25) Before [the foundation of] the mountains were sunk, Before the hills I was born. (26) He had not yet made earth and fields, Or the world’s first clumps of clay.

Wisdom as an emanation of Divinity (Kabbalah)

What are the Ten Statements?

First: The supernal Crown (Keter), blessed is His Name and people. Who are His people? Israel, as it is written:

"Acknowledge that the LORD is God; He made us and we are His [written as לא and read as לו] / we are ל-א 'to Aleph, ' His people, the flock He tends." (Psalms 100:3) - to recognize and to know the Unity of unities, unified in all of His names.

Second: Wisdom (Chochmah), as it is written:

“The LORD created me at the beginning of His course As the first of His works of old." (Proverbs 8:22)

And beginning is none other than Chochmah, as it is written:

The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the LORD" -- OR, 'the beginning is Chochmah, the fear of the Lord' (Psalms 111:10)
