מאי דכתיב (ויקרא ז, לז) זאת התורה לעולה למנחה ולחטאת ולאשם
כל העוסק בתורה כאילו הקריב עולה מנחה חטאת ואשם
אמר רבא האי לעולה למנחה עולה ומנחה מיבעי ליה אלא אמר רבא כל העוסק בתורה אינו צריך לא עולה (ולא חטאת) ולא מנחה ולא אשם.
Reish Lakish teaches:
"What is the meaning of the following verse:
'This is the Torah/Instruction of the whole-burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, and the other sin offering (Leviticus 7:27)?'
It means that all who studies Torah it is as if they sacrificed all 4 of these offerings."
Rava understands the verse differently and teaches:
"It means all who study Torah do not need any of the 4 offerings."
גדולה תפלה יותר מן הקרבנות שנא' (ישעיהו א, יא) למה לי רוב זבחיכם וכתיב ובפרשכם כפיכם
Prayer is greater than the sacrifices...
Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai was once leaving Jerusalem [after the destruction of the Temple] followed by his disciple Rabbi Joshua. Rabbi Joshua saw the ruins of the Temple and said: "Alas for us that the place which atoned for the sins of the people Israel [through the ritual of animal sacrifice] lies in ruins!" Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai said to him: "Do not be grieved, my son. We have another way of gaining atonement that is just as effective. And what is it? Deeds of lovingkindness (g'milut chasadim), as it is written, 'Lovingkindness I desire, not sacrifice.(Hosea 6:6)'"
(ג) עושה צדקה ומשפט נבחר למזבח...
One who performs deeds of charity is worthier than one who offers all the sacrifices...
זבחי אלהים רוח נשברה וגו׳ (תהלים נא) זבדי בן לוי ור׳ יוסי בן טרטס ורבנן חד אמר אמר דוד לפני הקב״ה אני כבשתי את יצרי ועשיתי תשובה לפניך אם אתה מקבלני בתשובה הרי יודע אני ששלמה בני עומד ובונה את בהמ״ק ובונה את המזבח ומקטיר עליו את הקרבנות שבתורה מן הדין קרי׳ זבחי אלהים רוח נשברה וחרנא אמר מנין למי שהוא עושה תשובה שמעלין עליו כאלו עלה לירושלים ובנה את בהמ״ק ובנה את המזבח ומקריב עליו כל הקרבנות שבתורה מן הדין קריא זבחי אלהים רוח נשברה
Leviticus Rabbah 7:2
True sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; [God, You will not despise a contrite and crushed heart.]' (Ps. 51:19) Zabdi b. Levi, and R. Jose b. Petros and the Rabbis gave interpretations [of this passage]. One of them said: David said before the Blessed Holy One: I subdued/sacrificed my Evil Inclination and repented before You; if You accept my repentance, I shall know that my son Solomon will arise and build the Sanctuary and the altar and offer thereon the sacrifices commanded in the Torah.'We conclude this from the passage: 'True sacrifice to God is a broken spirit . . . '. The other said: How do we know that, if a person repents, it is accounted unto him as if he had gone up to Jerusalem and built the Temple and the altars and offered thereon all the sacrifices ordained in the Torah? [We deduce this] from these verses: 'True sacrifice to God is a broken spirit . . .
