וְאַתֶּ֧ם תִּהְיוּ־לִ֛י מַמְלֶ֥כֶת כֹּהֲנִ֖ים וְג֣וֹי קָד֑וֹשׁ אֵ֚לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר תְּדַבֵּ֖ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
but you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
ממלכת כהנים ותהיו ממלכת משרתי:
[By stating "kingdom of priests," the Torah indicates] "A kingdom of My servants."
ואתם תהיו לי ממלכת כהנים. שָׂרִים, כְּמָה דְּאַתְּ אָמַר "וּבְנֵי דָּוִד כֹּהֲנִים" (שמואל ב ח'):
ואתם תהיו לי ממלכת כהנים AND YE SHALL BE UNTO ME A KINGDOM OF כהנים — i. e. princes, just as you say, (II Samuel 8:18) “And the sons of David were princes (כהנים)”, which cannot denote priests since his sons were of the tribe of Judah and not of Levi, the priestly tribe.
ואתם תהיו לי וגו'. צריך לדעת למה הוצרך לומר ואתם כיון שעד עתה להם היה מדבר. ואולי כי על משה ואהרן חוזרים הדברים, ולהיות שעד עתה היה מדבר על כל ישראל ועשאם סגולה אם כן יאמר משה כי אין הפרש עוד בינם לבין ישראל, לזה אמר ואתם פירוש אתה ואחיך תהיו לי ממלכת כהנים כנגד אהרן, וגוי קדוש כנגד משה ומשפחתו על דרך אומרו הקדשתי אתם [לי ואקח את] הלוים [וגו']:
ואתם תהיו לי ממלכת כהנים "And you shall be unto Me a nation of priests, etc." Why did the Torah have to write the word ואתם, seeing that it addresses the same people it has addressed in the preceding verse? Perhaps the Torah now addresses Moses and Aaron; whereas up to this point G'd spoke to the entire nation and made them into an עם סגולה, Moses and Aaron might well wonder how they themselves would be special after all of Israel had been elevated spiritually to such a high level. G'd tells them, therefore, i.e. ואתם, that Aaron and his sons would be a kingdom of priests, whereas Moses and his family would be גוי קדוש, a holy nation.
(א) ואתם תהיו לי ממלכת כהנים ובזה תהיו סגולה מכלם כי תהיו ממלכת כהנים להבין ולהורות לכל המין האנושי לקרוא כלם בשם ה', ולעבדו שכם אחד, כמו שיהיה ענין ישראל לעתיד לבא, כאמרו ואתם כהני ה' תקראו וכאמרו כי מציון תצא תורה:
(1) ואתם תהיו לי ממלכת כהנים, this will make you special for only you will be a kingdom of priests, something that will be understood by all of mankind. This is because all of you will call on the holy name of G’d and serve Him simultaneously. This was to be a forerunner of what will happen in the distant future as predicted by the prophet Isaiah (61:6) “and you will be proclaimed ‘priests’ of the Lord.” This is also the true meaning of כי מציון תצא תורה, “the Torah emanates from Zion.” (Isaiah 2:3)

The word "hieroglyphics" means "priestly script"--because only the priests could read and write. The English word "clerical" means (a) pertaining to the clergy, ministers of religion, and (b) office staff who type letters and keep records. The reason one word means two such different things is because, throughout the Middle Ages, ministers of religion were almost the only literate class... Functionally a priest in the ancient world was one could read and write. A kingdom of priests is therefore a nation of universal literacy.
