וַעֲשׂוּ סְיָג לַתּוֹרָה

סִיגָ֑יִךְ, סִיג
סִיג çîyg, seeg; or סוּג çûwg; (Ezekiel 22:18), from H5472 in the sense of refuse; scoria:—dross.
סוּג çûwg, soog; a primitive root; properly, to flinch, i.e. (by implication) to go back, literally (to retreat) or figuratively (to apostatize):—backslider, drive, go back, turn (away, back).
Pirkei Avot 1:1 משֶׁה קִבֵּל תּוֹרָה מִסִּינַי, וּמְסָרָהּ לִיהוֹשֻׁעַ, וִיהוֹשֻׁעַ לִזְקֵנִים, וּזְקֵנִים לִנְבִיאִים, וּנְבִיאִים מְסָרוּהָ לְאַנְשֵׁי כְנֶסֶת הַגְּדוֹלָה. הֵם אָמְרוּ שְׁלשָׁה דְבָרִים, הֱווּ מְתוּנִים בַּדִּין, וְהַעֲמִידוּ תַלְמִידִים הַרְבֵּה, וַעֲשׂוּ סְיָג לַתּוֹרָה:
Moses received the Torah at Sinai and transmitted it to Joshua, Joshua to the elders, and the elders to the prophets, and the prophets to the Men of the Great Assembly. They said three things: Be patient in [the administration of] justice, raise many disciples and make a fence round the Torah.
Here we see an unexpected word for “make a fence around the Torah.”

Rashi on Isaiah 1:25 ואשיבה ידי עליך. מכה אחר מכה עד כלות הפושעים ל’ בורית סבו"ן בלע"ז ולשונו ל’ נקיון כמו ובר לבב (תהילים כ״ד:ד׳) ע"ש שהוא מנקה הבגד מכתמיו סיגיך האמור למעלה כמו כספך היה לסיגים תערובת נחשת בכסף קרוי סיג אף כאן תערוב’ רשעים עם הכשרים אני אכלה הפושעי’ שהם הסיג: Blow after blow until the sinners are destroyed. The language of “בורית” (soap) “סבו"ן” in Old French, a language of cleanliness, as in “and pure of heart” (Tehillim 24:4), because it cleanses the garment from its stains. “סיגיך” refers to what was said above, “Your silver became full of dross [לסיגים].” Copper mixed into silver is called dross. Here, too, sinners are mixed in with the innocent ones. I will wipe out the sinners, who are the dross adulterating the silver. כל בדיליך. בדיל המעורב בכסף כלומר הרשעים שבך בדיל אשטיי"ס בלע"ז: Tin mixed in with silver, as if to say that the sinners who are within you are tin. “אשטיי"ס” in Old French.
