שמות ז׳:כ״ו-כ״ט

(כו) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה בֹּ֖א אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃ (כז) וְאִם־מָאֵ֥ן אַתָּ֖ה לְשַׁלֵּ֑חַ הִנֵּ֣ה אָנֹכִ֗י נֹגֵ֛ף אֶת־כָּל־גְּבוּלְךָ֖ בַּֽצְפַרְדְּעִֽים׃ (כח) וְשָׁרַ֣ץ הַיְאֹר֮ צְפַרְדְּעִים֒ וְעָלוּ֙ וּבָ֣אוּ בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ וּבַחֲדַ֥ר מִשְׁכָּבְךָ֖ וְעַל־מִטָּתֶ֑ךָ וּבְבֵ֤ית עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ וּבְעַמֶּ֔ךָ וּבְתַנּוּרֶ֖יךָ וּבְמִשְׁאֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ (כט) וּבְכָ֥ה וּֽבְעַמְּךָ֖ וּבְכָל־עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ יַעֲל֖וּ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִֽים׃

Exodus 7:26-29

(26) the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD: Let My people go that they may worship Me. (27) If you refuse to let them go, then I will plague your whole country with frogs. (28) The Nile shall swarm with frogs, and they shall come up and enter your palace, your bedchamber and your bed, the houses of your courtiers and your people, and your ovens and your kneading bowls. (29) The frogs shall come up on you and on your people and on all your courtiers.’”

(א) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָה֮ אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֒ אֱמֹ֣ר אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֗ן נְטֵ֤ה אֶת־יָדְךָ֙ בְּמַטֶּ֔ךָ עַל־הַ֨נְּהָרֹ֔ת עַל־הַיְאֹרִ֖ים וְעַל־הָאֲגַמִּ֑ים וְהַ֥עַל אֶת־הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֖ים עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (ב) וַיֵּ֤ט אַהֲרֹן֙ אֶת־יָד֔וֹ עַ֖ל מֵימֵ֣י מִצְרָ֑יִם וַתַּ֙עַל֙ הַצְּפַרְדֵּ֔עַ וַתְּכַ֖ס אֶת־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (ג) וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵ֥ן הַֽחֲרְטֻמִּ֖ים בְּלָטֵיהֶ֑ם וַיַּעֲל֥וּ אֶת־הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֖ים עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Exodus 8:1-3

(1) And the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron: Hold out your arm with the rod over the rivers, the canals, and the ponds, and bring up the frogs on the land of Egypt.” (2) Aaron held out his arm over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. (3) But the magicians did the same with their spells, and brought frogs upon the land of Egypt.

שמות ח׳:ט׳-י׳

(ט) וַיַּ֥עַשׂ יְהוָ֖ה כִּדְבַ֣ר מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיָּמֻ֙תוּ֙ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֔ים מִן־הַבָּתִּ֥ים מִן־הַחֲצֵרֹ֖ת וּמִן־הַשָּׂדֹֽת׃ (י) וַיִּצְבְּר֥וּ אֹתָ֖ם חֳמָרִ֣ם חֳמָרִ֑ם וַתִּבְאַ֖שׁ הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Exodus 8:9-10

(9) And the LORD did as Moses asked; the frogs died out in the houses, the courtyards, and the fields. (10) And they piled them up in heaps, till the land stank.

פסחים נ״ג א:י״ד

מֵיתִיבִי אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסֵי: תּוֹדוֹס אִישׁ רוֹמִי הִנְהִיג אֶת בְּנֵי רוֹמִי לֶאֱכוֹל גְּדָיִים מְקוּלָּסִין בְּלֵילֵי פְּסָחִים. שָׁלְחוּ לוֹ: אִלְמָלֵא תּוֹדוֹס אַתָּה גָּזַרְנוּ עָלֶיךָ נִדּוּי, שֶׁאַתָּה מַאֲכִיל אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל קָדָשִׁים בַּחוּץ.

Pesachim 53a:14

Rabbi Yosei said: Theodosius [Todos] of Rome, leader of the Jewish community there, instituted the custom for the Roman Jews to eat kids roasted [mekulas] whole with their entrails over their heads on the evenings of Passover, as was the custom in the Temple. The Sages sent a message to him: If you were not Theodosius, an important person, we would have decreed ostracism upon you, as it appears as if you are feeding Israel consecrated food outside of Israel.

פסחים נ״ג ב:ז׳-ח׳

תָּא שְׁמַע. עוֹד זוֹ דָּרַשׁ תּוֹדוֹס אִישׁ רוֹמִי: מָה רָאוּ חֲנַנְיָה מִישָׁאֵל וַעֲזַרְיָה שֶׁמָּסְרוּ [עַצְמָן] עַל קְדוּשַּׁת הַשֵּׁם לְכִבְשַׁן הָאֵשׁ? נָשְׂאוּ קַל וָחוֹמֶר בְּעַצְמָן מִצְּפַרְדְּעִים. וּמָה צְפַרְדְּעִים שֶׁאֵין מְצֻוִּוין עַל קְדוּשַּׁת הַשֵּׁם, כְּתִיב בְּהוּ: ״וּבָאוּ [וְעָלוּ] בְּבֵיתֶךָ [וְגוֹ׳] וּבְתַנּוּרֶיךָ וּבְמִשְׁאֲרוֹתֶיךָ״, אֵימָתַי מִשְׁאָרוֹת מְצוּיוֹת אֵצֶל תַּנּוּר? הֱוֵי אוֹמֵר בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁהַתַּנּוּר חַם. אָנוּ שֶׁמְּצֻוִּוין עַל קְדוּשַּׁת הַשֵּׁם — עַל אַחַת כַּמָּה וְכַמָּה.

Pesachim 53b:7-8

Come and hear: This was also taught by Theodosius of Rome: What did Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah see that led them to deliver themselves to the fiery furnace for sanctification of the name of God during the rule of Nebuchadnezzar rather than worship idols under duress? They drew an a fortiori inference on their own from the plague of frogs in Egypt. With regard to frogs, which are not commanded concerning the sanctification of the name of God, it is written: “And the river shall swarm with frogs, which shall go up and come into your house, and into your bedchamber, and onto your bed, and into the houses of your servants, and upon your people, and into their ovens and kneading bowls” (Exodus 7:28). When are kneading bowls found near the oven? You must say that it is when the oven is hot. If in fulfilling the command to harass the Egyptians, the frogs entered burning ovens, all the more so, we, who are commanded concerning the sanctification of the name of God, should deliver ourselves to be killed in the fiery furnace for that purpose. Apparently, Theodosius taught Torah in public, which indicates that he was a great man.

וַיֹּאמֶר ה' אֶל משֶׁה אֱמֹר אֶל אַהֲרֹן נְטֵה אֶת יָדְךָ, אָמַר רַבִּי תַּנְחוּם אָמַר לוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְמשֶׁה, הַמַּיִם שֶׁשְּׁמָרוּךָ בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁהֻשְׁלַכְתָּ לַיְאוֹר לֹא יִלְקוּ עַל יָדֶיךָ. וַיֵּט אַהֲרֹן אֶת יָדוֹ, לָמָּה הֵבִיא עֲלֵיהֶם צְפַרְדְּעִים, מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהָיוּ מְשַׁעְבְּדִין בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וְאוֹמְרִין לָהֶן, הָבִיאוּ לָנוּ שְׁקָצִים וּרְמָשִׂים, לְפִיכָךְ הֵבִיא עֲלֵיהֶן צְפַרְדְּעִים. וּבְשָׁעָה שֶׁהָיוּ מוֹזְגִין אֶת הַכּוֹס הָיָה מִתְמַלֵּא מִן הַצְפַרְדְּעִים. וַתַּעַל הַצְּפַרְדֵּעַ וַתְּכַס אֶת וגו', תָּנֵי רַבִּי עֲקִיבָא אוֹמֵר צְפַרְדֵּעַ אַחַת הָיְתָה וְהִיא הִשְׁרִיצָה וּמִלְּאָה אֶת אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם, אָמַר לוֹ רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן עֲזַרְיָה עֲקִיבָא מַה לְּךָ אֵצֶל הַגָּדָה, כַּלֵּה מִדַּבְּרוֹתֶיךָ וְלֵךְ אֵצֶל נְגָעִים וְאָהֳלוֹת, צְפַרְדֵּעַ אַחַת הָיְתָה וְשָׁרְקָה לָהֶן וּבָאוּ. וַיַּעֲשׂוּ כֵן הַחַרְטֻמִּים בְּלָטֵיהֶם, שֶׁהָיוּ סְבוּרִין שֶׁהֵן מַעֲשֶׂה שֵׁדִים.

Shemot Rabbah 10:4

AND THE FROG ASCENDED AND COVERED, ETC. It was taught, R. Akiva said: There was one frog and it produced a swarm of frogs and it filled the land of Egypt (with frogs). R. Elazar ben Azaryah said to [R.Akiva], "Akiva, what so you have to do with Aggadah? Cease your discourses and focus on Negaim and Oholot! (Rather, what happened was that) There was originally one frog and it croaked and they (the others) came. THE NECROMANCERS DID THE SAME THROUGH THEIR INCANTATIONS...the necromancers thought that [the frogs] were the product of demons.

באר מים חיים, שמות ח׳:ג׳:א׳

ויעשו כן וגו' הצפרדעים על ארץ מצרים. אמרו על ארץ מצרים לכאורה מיותר כי להיכן העלו אותם אם לא על ארץ מצרים. ואמנם כי הנה נודע מאמר חז"ל (פסחים נ"ג:) דרש תודוס איש רומי מה ראו חנניה מישאל ועזריה שמסרו עצמן לכבשן האש נשאו קל וחומר בעצמן מצפרדעים מה צפרדעים שאין מצווין על קידוש ה' כתיב בהם ובאו בביתך וגו' ובתנוריך ובמשארותיך וגו' אימתי משארות מצויות בתנור בשעה שהתנור חם וכו' אנו על אחת כמה וכמה וכו' עד כאן. הרי שהצפרדעים שהעלה אהרן עלו לכל המקומות בפקודת ה' אשר עליהם מה שאין כן אלו הצרפדעים שהעלו החרטומים לא היו צריכים לעלות למקומות אחרים ומכל שכן אל התנור בשעה שהוא חם, כי אם על הארץ לבד כי לא היה פקודת ה' עליהם. ולזה אמר הכתוב ויעלו את הצפרדעים על ארץ מצרים כי לא עלו רק על ארץ מצרים לבד ולא לשארי מקומות מה שאין כן באהרן נאמר ותעל הצפרדע ותכס את ארץ מצרים כלומר תחלה עלתה לכל מקום שהיתה צריכה ואחר כך ותכס את ארץ מצרים כי היו מרובין למאוד.
