Listen, Israel: the Lord is our God, the Lord is One. Love the Lord you God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might. These words which I command you today shall be on your heart. Teach them repeatedly to your children, speaking of them when you sit at home and when you travel on the way, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be an emblem between your eyes. Write them on the doorposts of your house and gates.

The Shema is the source in the Torah for four really important mitzvot (obligations): wearing tefillin, reciting the Shema, putting up a mezuza and teaching and learning Torah.

  • What is the reason the Torah gives for doing all these things? **
  • Why does it specify: "Teach them repeatedly to your children"? ***

The following are the things for which a person enjoys the fruits in this world while the principal remains for him in the world to come (One benefits in this world, and gets a reward in the world to come): Honouring one’s father and mother; and performing acts of kindness; and making peace between a person and his friend; and the study of the Torah is equal to them all.

What do the first three mitzvot on this list have in common? *

Why is the study of Torah on this list? Why do you think it is equal to all the other mitzvot? **

What does this teach us about the mitzvah of learning Torah? ***

A father is obligated with regard to his son to circumcise him, and to redeem him if he is a firstborn son who must be redeemed by payment to a priest, and to teach him Torah, and to marry him to a woman, and to teach him a trade. And some say: A father is also obligated to teach his son to swim. Rabbi Yehuda says: Any father who does not teach his son a trade teaches him banditry [listut]. The Gemara expresses surprise at this statement: Can it enter your mind that he actually teaches him banditry? Rather, the baraita means that it is as though he teaches him banditry.

This source, from the Talmud, lists the obligations that a father has to their son in Jewish Law

  • Is there a common theme behind all the obligations? If so, what is it? **
  • What do you think it means by the statement: "Any father who does not teach his son a trade teaches him banditry"? What is the modern equivalent of teaching your son a trade? **
  • If you were writing a list of obligations of a father to their son, which of these would you include and which would you leave out? What would you add to the list? *
