(6) And I will make it a desolation; It shall not be pruned or hoed, And it shall be overgrown with shamir and thistles. And I will command the clouds To drop no rain on it.”
(23) “For in that day, every spot where there could stand a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels of silver shall become a wilderness of shamir and thistle.
(1) The guilt of Judah is inscribed With a stylus of iron, Engraved with a point or shamir. On the tablet of their hearts, And on the horns of their altars,

(12) When the former prophets died, the Urim and Thummim ceased. When Temple was destroyed, the shamir and nopheth zufim ceased.
(א) משחרב בית המקדש בטל שמיר ונופת צופים אמר ר' יהודה מה טיבו של שמיר זה [בריה היתה מששת ימי בראשית משנותנים אותו על גבי אבנים על גבי קורות מתפתחות לפניו כלוחי פנקס ולא עוד אלא כשנותנין אותו ע"ג ברזל הוא בוקע ויורד מלפניו ואין כל דבר יכול לעמוד בו כיצד עושין לו כורכין אותו במוכין של צמר ונותנים אותו לתוך מני של עופרת מלא סובין של שעורין ובו בנה שלמה את בית המקדש
When the Temple was destroyed, the shamir and the nophet zufim ceased. Rabbi Yehuda said: What is the nature of this shamir? . . When you put it on stones or beams they open before it like the pages of a notebook. Not only this but when you put it on iron it (the iron) cleaves and falls before it. Nothing can withstand it. How do you handle it? You wrap it in strands of wool and put it inside a canister filled with grains of barley. This is what Solomon built the Temple with.
