The verse continues: “And she said: Discern, please, whose are these, the signet, and the cords, and the staff” (Genesis 38:25). Rabbi Ḥama, son of Rabbi Ḥanina, says: With "discern" Judah informed his father, with "discern" they informed Judah. With "discern" he informed: “And they sent the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father; and said: This have we found. Discern now whether it is your son’s coat or not” (Genesis 37:32). With "discern" they informed him: “And she said: Discern, please, whose are these.”
“Discern, please [na].” Na is nothing other than a language of request. She said to him: I request of you: Discern the image of your Creator and do not avert your eyes from me. “And Judah acknowledged them, and said: She is more righteous than I; forasmuch as I gave her not to Shelah my son” (Genesis 38:26).
This is the same as Rav Ḥanin bar Bizna says that Rabbi Shimon Ḥasida says: Joseph, who sanctified the name of Heaven in private merited that one letter from the name of the Holy One, Blessed be God, was added to his name, as it is written: “He appointed it in Joseph [bihosef ] for a testimony in his name, when He went forth against the land of Egypt” (Psalms 81:6). Judah, who sanctified the name of Heaven in public, merited that his entire name is called by the name of the Holy One, Blessed be God...
...“She is more righteous than I [mimmenni].” From where did he know? A Divine Voice went forth and said: From Me these hidden matters emerged.
The Sages taught: The basic mitzva of Hanukkah: a light per a person and one's household. And the mehadrin, a light for each and every one in the household. And the mehadrin min hamehadrin, Beit Shammai say: On the first day one kindles eight, and there on, gradually decreases. And Beit Hillel say: On the first day one kindles one light, and from there on, gradually increases.
Ulla said: There were two amora’im in the West, Eretz Yisrael, who disagreed with regard to this dispute, Rabbi Yosei bar Avin and Rabbi Yosei bar Zevida. One said that the reason for Beit Shammai’s opinion corresponds to the incoming days. The reason for Beit Hillel’s opinion corresponds to the outgoing days. And one said that the reason for Beit Shammai’s opinion is it corresponds to the bulls of the festival of Sukkot. The reason for Beit Hillel’s : One elevates in sanctity and one does not downgrade...
...The Sages taught in a baraita: It is a mitzva to place the Hanukkah lamp at the entrance to one’s house on the outside. If one lived upstairs, one places it at the window adjacent to the public domain. And in a time of danger, one places it on the table and that is sufficient. Rava said: One must kindle another light in order to use its light. And if there is a bonfire, one need not. However, if one is an important person, even though there is a bonfire, one must kindle another light.
What is Hanukkah? The Sages taught: On the twenty-fifth of Kislev, the days of Hanukkah are eight. One may not eulogize on them and one may not fast on them. When the Greeks entered the Sanctuary they defiled all the oils that were in the Sanctuary. And when the Hasmonean monarchy overcame and emerged victorious over them, they searched and found only one cruse of oil that was placed with the seal of the High Priest. And there was there to light only one day. A miracle occurred and they lit from it eight days. The next year the Sages instituted those days and made them holidays with recitation of hallel and special thanksgiving in prayer and blessings.
