אָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן גַּמְלִיאֵל, אַרְבָּעָה שֵׁמוֹת נִקְרְאוּ לָאָרֶץ, כְּנֶגֶד אַרְבָּעָה תְּקוּפוֹתֶיהָ: אֶרֶץ, תֵּבֵל, אֲדָמָה, אַרְקָא. אֶרֶץ, כְּנֶגֶד תְּקוּפַת נִיסָן, שֶׁהִיא מֵרִיצָה אֶת פֵּרוֹתֶיהָ. תֵּבֵל, כְּנֶגֶד תְּקוּפַת תַּמּוּז, שֶׁהִיא מְתַבֶּלֶת אֶת פֵּרוֹתֶיהָ. אֲדָמָה, כְּנֶגֶד תְּקוּפַת תִּשְׁרֵי, שֶׁהָאָרֶץ עֲשׂוּיָה בּוֹלִין בּוֹלִין שֶׁל אֲדָמָה. אַרְקָא, כְּנֶגֶד תְּקוּפַת טֵבֵת, שֶׁהִיא מוֹרֶקֶת אֶת פֵּרוֹתֶיהָ.
Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel taught, the earth is called by four names, corresponding to four seasons: Eretz, Tevel, Adamah, Arka. Eretz corresponding to the period of Nisan (the month of Passover), for she (the earth) pushes forth her fruits. Tevel, corresponding to the period of Tammuz (~July), for she (the earth) flavors the her fruits. Adamah, corresponding to Tishrei (month of the high holidays), for the land makes clods and clods of earth. Arka, corresponding to the period of Tevet, that she (the earth) makes the fruits turn green.
