Parasha Vayera 5781 Heshvan 20 ~ November 7, 2020
And G-d said, “If there be 50 righteous, I will forgive the city because of them.”
Abraham continued, “See, now, I have begun to speak with my Lord and I am only dust and ashes. How about if there were only forty-five righteous? Or 40? Or 30? Or 20? Or 10?”
And G-d responded to each. “I shall not destroy the whole city if there are forty, or thirty, or twenty or even ten righteous people.”
This Shabbat as we read from Parasha Vayera and as we conclude a week that has been filled with much anxiety for many, let us aspire to be among the righteous of our nation, calling upon our better angels to help guide us toward a time of much needed healing, uniting our nation, every single one of our 50 states, as one people, under G-d with liberty and justice for all.
May we be inspired by this weeks’ Parasha of all that is possible if we keep an open mind and look to those that have gone before us to guide us onto a path of love, compassion, understanding, health, peace and optimism for the journey that awaits us and our nation; and let us repair this world together.
May it be his will!
May it be Your will,
Adonai our G-d,
G-d of our ancestors,
To restore our nation and its people to each other.
In hope, love and togetherness
May our differences in understanding and practice
Never be a source of sinat chinam, chat v’shalom,
Nor physical violence, chat v’shalom.
May our love of Torah, and all of its teachings shine bright upon us
From the four corners of the earth, to the shores of our nation
May it be your will Adonai to guide us forward, opening up our hearts, our eyes and our minds, readying and enabling us to usher in an era filled with love, tolerance, patience and understanding for all.
May this be your will.
Sabbath is also a time when we reflect upon Hashem’s majestic creation of the world with optimism and hope for a time when everyday should be as blessed, holy, pure and peaceful as the Shabbath day. May our homes be filled with love, light and peace this Shabbat and may we invite and welcome the prophet Elijah to join us this Shabbat as we begin a new era in America, united behind new leadership that will bring us one step closer to that world we envision and aspire to be.
Shabbat Shalom
