Elul 15 - Sh'ma Koleinu

Merciful Father Hear our voice, Adonoy, our God; spare us and have compassion on us, and accept our prayers compassionately and willingly,

for You are Almighty Who hears prayers and supplications; and from Your Presence, our King, do not turn us away empty-handed, be gracious and answer us and hear our prayer

Hear our voice, Adonoy, our God; spare us and have compassion on us, and accept our prayers mercifully and willingly. Lead us back to You, Adonoy and we shall find the way back; renew our days as of old.

Cast us not away from Your Presence, and Your holy spirit take not from us.

Do not cast us off in time of old age, when our strength fails, do not forsake us.

Forsake us not, Adonoy, our God, be not far removed from us.

What differences do you notice between the version of this that appears in the weekday liturgy and this section of the version from the Yom Kippur liturgy?
HE HEARD OUR VOICE — through the blessing with which our father, Jacob, had blessed us — “the voice is Jacob’s voice” (Genesis 27:22), because whenever we cry we are answered (Midrash Tanchuma, Beshalach 9 on בשלח).
Time and again in our Tanach, we hear of God answering our cries. How do the words "Sh'ma Koleinu" resonate with you?
(21) Take us back, O LORD, to Yourself, And let us come back; Renew our days as of old!
What does it mean to renew our days as of old?
(13) Do not cast me out of Your presence, or take Your holy spirit away from me.
(9) Do not cast me off in old age; when my strength fails, do not forsake me!
(22) Do not abandon me, O LORD; my God, be not far from me;
These three lines from the Psalms are desperate, petitionary prayers. How do they change the tone of Sh'ma Koleinu here?

If you wish to fast, you must make a commitment to do so on the preceding day, during the Shemoneh esrei of Minchah. In the berachah Shema koleinu, you should mentally accept upon yourself, to fast and before saying Yiheyu leratzon, you should say, Master of the universe, I come before You to accept a fast etc. (as it is written in the siddur.)

Why was Sh'ma Koleinu chosen as the prayer of the daily Amidah during which one must commit to a fast? What are the implications for Yom Kippur?
