NIMROD AND THE TOWER OF BABEL
Noah brought his sons and his grandsons, and he blessed them with their (several) settlements, and he gave them as an inheritance all the earth. He blessed Shem and his sons, (making them) dark but comely, and he gave them the habitable earth. He blessed Ham and his sons, (making them) dark like the raven, and he gave them as an inheritance the coast of the sea. He blessed Japheth and his sons, (making) all of them white and beautiful, and he gave them for an inheritance the desert and its fields; these (are the inheritances with) which he endowed them.
I am black but comely, etc. You, my friends, let me not be light in your eyes. Even if my husband has left me because of my blackness, I am only black because of the tanning of the sun, but I am comely with the shape of beautiful limbs. Though I am black like the tents of Keidar, which are blackened because of the rains, for they are always spread out in the wilderness, I am easily cleansed to become like the curtains of Shlomo.
That I am so black. For my blackness and my ugliness are not from my mother’s womb, but from the sun’s tanning, and that blackness can easily be whitened by staying in the shade.

[She replies to the maidens] that are the daughters of Jerusalem, "If I am black before you like the tents of Kedar that are struck by the sun [constantly], I am beautiful like the curtains of Solomon. Do not think that I was born with this darkness, rather it is a happenstance and it will pass; its cause is the sun that struck me outside for my mother's children quarreled with me and made me the guardian [of the vineyards]...
His cheeks are like beds of spices, Banks of perfume, His lips are like roses; They drip flowing myrrh.
The first one emerged ruddy, like a hairy mantle all over; so they named him Esau.

For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I seized with anguish; I have become blackened, appalment hath taken hold on me.
...Kadarti: A term of blackness and darkness
...I have become blackened: My appearance has darkened and confusion has gripped me.

Now their faces are blacker than soot, They are not recognized in the streets; Their skin has shriveled on their bones, It has become dry as wood.
