How do we remain thankful in the midst of hardship - Psalm 30 explains
(12) You turned my lament into dancing, you undid my sackcloth and girded me with joy,
(13) that [my] whole being might sing hymns to You endlessly; O LORD my God, I will praise You forever.

Psalm 30:12

"You have turned my mourning into dancing.

You have undone my sackcloth

and girded me with joy.

Therefore my soul shall sing to You,

and not be silent;

Lord, my God, I will praise You forever."

"Limaan yizamercha chavod

V’ lo yidom Hashem,

Elochai l' odecha."

Psalm 30 expresses sheer gratitude to God; for being alive, for healing, for raising my soul up. The fact that I am able to recite this Psalm and sing to God is cause for infinite thankfulness.

It is also recited during the holiday of Hanukah commemorating the rekindling of the Menorah in the Temple in Jerusalem. For the ancient Israelites, the Greek/Assyrian Empire had conquered the land they lived in, dictated the society's values, even taken over the Temple itself, the very spot of the Holy of Holies, the special place where God's presence rests on earth.

Yet it was only temporary as times and conditions eventually changed. But throughout this and other difficult journeys, our soul’s song of healing and renewal has long remained.”

As Psalm 30 continues:

Therefore my soul shall sing to You,

and not be silent;

Lord, my God,

I will praise You forever."
