(28) You shall not put off the skimming of the first yield of your vats. You shall give Me the first-born among your sons.

(11) The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: (12) I hereby take the Levites from among the Israelites in place of all the first-born, the first issue of the womb among the Israelites: the Levites shall be Mine. (13) For every first-born is Mine: at the time that I smote every first-born in the land of Egypt, I consecrated every first-born in Israel, man and beast, to Myself, to be Mine, the LORD’s.

(44) The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: (45) Take the Levites in place of all the first-born among the Israelite people, and the cattle of the Levites in place of their cattle; and the Levites shall be Mine, the LORD’s. (46) And as the redemption price of the 273 Israelite first-born over and above the number of the Levites, (47) take five shekels per head—take this by the sanctuary weight, twenty gerahs to the shekel— (48) and give the money to Aaron and his sons as the redemption price for those who are in excess. (49) So Moses took the redemption money from those over and above the ones redeemed by the Levites; (50) he took the money from the first-born of the Israelites, 1,365 sanctuary shekels. (51) And Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons at the LORD’s bidding, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
Why the Levites?

(26) Moses stood up in the gate of the camp and said, “Whoever is for the LORD, come here!” And all the Levites rallied to him. (27) He said to them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Each of you put sword on thigh, go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay brother, neighbor, and kin.” (28) The Levites did as Moses had bidden; and some three thousand of the people fell that day.
Which first born?

Why does Rav Adda bar Ahava say: With regard to a female Levite who gave birth, her firstborn son is exempt from the obligation of giving five sela coins to the priest to be redeemed? That is not difficult, as it is in accordance with the statement of Mar, son of Rav Yosef, in the name of Rava, who says: “Firstborn of the womb” (Exodus 13:12), indicates that the Merciful One renders the obligations of firstborn status dependent on being the firstborn of the womb.

(11) And [Hannah] made this vow: “O LORD of Hosts, if You will look upon the suffering of Your maidservant and will remember me and not forget Your maidservant, and if You will grant Your maidservant a male child, I will dedicate him to the LORD for all the days of his life; and no razor shall ever touch his head.”

Jewish Encyclopedia, 'Elkanah'
According to the genealogical tables, Elkanah was, a Levite, a fact otherwise not mentioned in the books of Samuel. The fact that Elkanah, a Levite, was denominated an Ephraimite is analogous to the designation of a Levite belonging to Judah (Judges xvii. 7).
