Songs of Praise: Hallel on Yom Ha'atzmaut

והלל זה מי אמרו נביאים שביניהן תקנו להן לישראל שיהו אומרין אותו על כל פרק ופרק ועל כל צרה וצרה שלא תבא עליהן ולכשנגאלין אומרים אותו על גאולתן

The Gemara asks: And who said this hallel mentioned in the mishna, Psalms 113–118? The Gemara answers: The Prophets among them established this hallel for the Jewish people, that they should recite it on every appropriate occasion; and for every trouble, may it not come upon them, they recite the supplications included in hallel. When they are redeemed, they recite it over their redemption, as hallel includes expressions of gratitude for the redemption.

Rava said: That is to say that the hallel recited on a New Moon is not required by Torah law but is a custom. As Rabbi Yoḥanan said in the name of Rabbi Shimon ben Yehotzadak: On eighteen days a year, the individual completes the full hallel. And they are: The eight days of the festival of Sukkot, including the Eighth Day of Assembly; the eight days of Hanukkah; the first Festival day of Passover; and the Festival day of Assembly, i.e., Shavuot. And in the Diaspora, where a second day is added to each Festival due to uncertainty over the correct date, there are twenty-one days, and they are: The nine days of the festival of Sukkot, including the last day, known as the Celebration of the Torah, the eight days of Hanukkah, the first two days of Passover, and the two Festival days of Assembly. On this topic, the Gemara relates: Rav happened to come to Babylonia, where he saw that they were reciting hallel on a New Moon. Unfamiliar with this practice, he thought to stop them, as he assumed that they were reciting hallel unnecessarily. Once he saw that they were omitting portions, he said: I can learn from this that they are maintaining the custom of their forefathers, i.e., they know that it is a custom, not an obligation. It is taught in a baraita: An individual should not begin reciting hallel on a New Moon, but if he has begun he should complete it.

(1) Hallelujah. O servants of the Eternal, give praise; praise the name of the Eternal. (2) Let the name of the Eternalbe blessed now and forever. (3) From east to west the name of the Eternal is praised. (4) The Eternal is exalted above all nations; God's glory is above the heavens. (5) Who is like the Eternal our God, who, enthroned on high, (6) sees what is below, in heaven and on earth? (7) God raises the poor from the dust, lifts up the needy from the refuse heap (8) to set them with the great, with the great men of God's people. (9) God sets the childless woman among her household as a happy mother of children. Hallelujah.

(1) When Israel went forth from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech, (2) Judah became God's-holy one, Israel, God's dominion. (3) The sea saw them and fled, Jordan ran backward, (4) mountains skipped like rams, hills like sheep. (5) What alarmed you, O sea, that you fled, Jordan, that you ran backward, (6) mountains, that you skipped like rams, hills, like sheep? (7) Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Eternal, at the presence of the God of Jacob, (8) who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flinty rock into a fountain.

(1) Not to us, O Adonai, not to us but to Your name bring glory for the sake of Your love and Your faithfulness. (2) Let the nations not say, “Where, now, is their God?” (3) when our God is in heaven and all that God wills God accomplishes. (4) Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. (5) They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see; (6) they have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell; (7) they have hands, but cannot touch, feet, but cannot walk; they can make no sound in their throats. (8) Those who fashion them, all who trust in them, shall become like them. (9) O Israel, trust in the Eternal! God is their help and shield. (10) O house of Aaron, trust in the Eternal! God is their help and shield. (11) O you who fear the Eternal, trust in Adonai! God is their help and shield.

(12) The Eternal is mindful of us. God will bless us; God will bless the house of Israel; God will bless the house of Aaron; (13) God will bless those who fear the Eternal, small and great alike. (14) May the Eternal increase your numbers, yours and your children’s also. (15) May you be blessed by the Eternal, Maker of heaven and earth. (16) The heavens belong to the Eternal, but the earth God gave over to humanity. (17) The dead cannot praise the Eternal, nor any who go down into silence. (18) But we will bless the Eternal now and forever. Hallelujah.

(1) I love the Eternal for God hears my voice, my pleas; (2) for God turns God's ear to me whenever I call. (3) The bonds of death encompassed me; the torments of Sheol overtook me. I came upon trouble and sorrow (4) and I invoked the name of the Eternal, “O Eternal, save my life!” (5) The Eternal is gracious and beneficent; our God is compassionate. (6) The Eternal protects the simple; I was brought low and God saved me. (7) Be at rest, once again, O my soul, for the Eternal has been good to you. (8) You have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. (9) I shall walk before the Eternal in the lands of the living. (10) I trust [in the Eternal]; out of great suffering I spoke (11) and said rashly, “All people are false.”

(12) How can I repay the Eternal for all God's bounties to me? (13) I raise the cup of deliverance and invoke the name of the Eternal. (14) I will pay my vows to the Eternal in the presence of all God's people. (15) The death of God's faithful ones is grievous in the Eternal's sight. (16) O Adonai, I am Your servant, Your servant, the son of Your maidservant; You have undone the cords that bound me. (17) I will sacrifice a thank offering to You and invoke the name of the Eternal. (18) I will pay my vows to the Eternal in the presence of all God's people, (19) in the courts of the house of the Eternal, in the midst of Jerusalem. Hallelujah.

(1) Praise the Eternal, for God is good, God's steadfast love is eternal. (2) Let Israel declare, “God's steadfast love is eternal.” (3) Let the house of Aaron declare, “God's steadfast love is eternal.” (4) Let those who fear the Eternal declare, “God's steadfast love is eternal.” (5) In distress I called on the Eternal; Adonai answered me and brought me relief. (6) The Eternal is on my side, I have no fear; what can man do to me? (7) With the Eternal on my side as my helper, I will see the downfall of my foes. (8) It is better to take refuge in the Eternal than to trust in mortals; (9) it is better to take refuge in the Eternal than to trust in the great. (10) All nations have beset me; by the name of the Eternal I will surely cut them down. (11) They beset me, they surround me; by the name of the Eternal I will surely cut them down. (12) They have beset me like bees; they shall be extinguished like burning thorns; by the name of the Eternal I will surely cut them down. (13) You pressed me hard, I nearly fell; but the Eternal helped me. (14) The Eternal is my strength and might; He has become my deliverance. (15) The tents of the victorious resound with joyous shouts of deliverance, “The right hand of the Eternal is triumphant! (16) The right hand of the Eternal is exalted! The right hand of the Eternal is triumphant!” (17) I shall not die but live and proclaim the works of the Eternal. (18) The Eternal punished me severely, but did not hand me over to death. (19) Open the gates of victory for me that I may enter them and praise the Eternal. (20) This is the gateway to the Eternal— the victorious shall enter through it. (21) I praise You, for You have answered me, and have become my deliverance. (22) The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. (23) This is the Eternal doing; it is marvelous in our sight. (24) This is the day that the Eternal has made— let us exult and rejoice on it. (25) O Adonai, deliver us! O Adonai, let us prosper! (26) May the one who enters be blessed in the name of the Eternal; we bless you from the House of the Eternal. (27) Adonai is God; God has given us light; bind the festal offering to the horns of the altar with cords. (28) You are my God and I will praise You; You are my God and I will extol You. (29) Praise the Eternal for God is good, God's steadfast love is eternal.
