We recently began our unit on Haftorah. As you might recall from the first session, the selections of Haftorah come from the section in TaNaCh called Nevi'im, or Prophets. The section of Nevi'im mainly consists of two things:

1. Presentation of the historical narrative of our ancient Kingdom of Israel;

2. Presents the teachings of the Prophets who lived and disseminated the word of H" throughout this time.

What's amazing is that for a select few of our prophets, the Torah gives us a glimpse into the moment when their careers began. Some of those moments are presented below. Read through each of them, and then discuss the proceeding questions.

Fourth Time's a Charm

(א) וְהַנַּ֧עַר שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל מְשָׁרֵ֥ת אֶת־יקוק לִפְנֵ֣י עֵלִ֑י וּדְבַר־יקוק הָיָ֤ה יָקָר֙ בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֔ם אֵ֥ין חָז֖וֹן נִפְרָֽץ׃ (ס)

(ב) וַֽיְהִי֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא וְעֵלִ֖י שֹׁכֵ֣ב בִּמְקֹמ֑וֹ ועינו [וְעֵינָיו֙] הֵחֵ֣לּוּ כֵה֔וֹת לֹ֥א יוּכַ֖ל לִרְאֽוֹת׃ (ג) וְנֵ֤ר אֱלֹקִים֙ טֶ֣רֶם יִכְבֶּ֔ה וּשְׁמוּאֵ֖ל שֹׁכֵ֑ב בְּהֵיכַ֣ל יקוק אֲשֶׁר־שָׁ֖ם אֲר֥וֹן אֱלֹקִֽים׃ (פ)

(י) וַיָּבֹ֤א יקוק וַיִּתְיַצַּ֔ב וַיִּקְרָ֥א כְפַֽעַם־בְּפַ֖עַם שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל ׀ שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ דַּבֵּ֔ר כִּ֥י שֹׁמֵ֖עַ עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ (פ)

(1) Young Samuel was in the service of the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; prophecy was not widespread.

(2) One day, Eli was asleep in his usual place; his eyes had begun to fail and he could barely see. (3) The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where the Ark of God was.

(4) The LORD called out to Samuel, and he answered, “I’m coming. (5) He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But he replied, “I didn’t call you; go back to sleep.” So he went back and lay down.

(6) Again the LORD called, “Samuel!” Samuel rose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But he replied, “I didn’t call, my son; go back to sleep.”—

(7) Now Samuel had not yet experienced the LORD; the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.— (8) The LORD called Samuel again, a third time, and he rose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the boy. (9) And Eli said to Samuel, “Go lie down. If you are called again, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.’” And Samuel went to his place and lay down.

(10) The LORD came, and stood there, and He called as before: “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.

1. This chapter opens up by telling us that the word of H" was rare. Identify the Hebrew word used for this. Use your mouse to highlight it and to then pull up different translations under "Resources" in the right-hand column. What else can this word mean? Are any of those other definitions appropriate here?

2. Given what you now know about this word and this time period - Why is specifically Samuel chosen to hear the word of God? The answer is not so clear. Start out by listing all of the pieces of information about Samuel that this chapter gives us. Who is he? What is he doing? How are his actions, and he himself, described?

3. Not once, not twice, but three times, Samuel hears someone calling him - who we know to be God, but who he thinks is Eli. He rouses himself from his sleep and runs over to wake Eli up, showing his eagerness to serve. What is going on here? Does God perhaps have a sense of humor?

(יד) וַיַּ֤עַן עָמוֹס֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־אֲמַצְיָ֔ה לֹא־נָבִ֣יא אָנֹ֔כִי וְלֹ֥א בֶן־נָבִ֖יא אָנֹ֑כִי כִּֽי־בוֹקֵ֥ר אָנֹ֖כִי וּבוֹלֵ֥ס שִׁקְמִֽים׃ (טו) וַיִּקָּחֵ֣נִי יקוק מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י הַצֹּ֑אן וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלַי֙ יקוק לֵ֥ךְ הִנָּבֵ֖א אֶל־עַמִּ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (טז) וְעַתָּ֖ה שְׁמַ֣ע דְּבַר־יקוק אַתָּ֣ה אֹמֵ֗ר לֹ֤א תִנָּבֵא֙ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְלֹ֥א תַטִּ֖יף עַל־בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂחָֽק׃ (יז) לָכֵ֞ן כֹּה־אָמַ֣ר יקוק

(10) Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent this message to King Jeroboam of Israel: “Amos is conspiring against you within the House of Israel. The country cannot endure the things he is saying. (11) For Amos has said, ‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall be exiled from its soil.’” (12) Amaziah also said to Amos, “Seer! Off with you to the land of Judah! Earn your living there, and do your prophesying there. (13) But don’t ever prophesy again at Bethel; for it is a king’s sanctuary and a royal palace.

(14) Amos answered Amaziah: “I am not a prophet, and I am not a prophet’s disciple. I am a cattle breeder and a tender of sycamore figs. (15) But the LORD took me away from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’ (16) And so, hear the word of the LORD. You say I must not prophesy about the House of Israel or preach about the House of Isaac; (17) but this, I swear, is what the LORD said!"

4. What term does Amaziah use to refer to Amos? (Look up the Hebrew word in the dictionary for a fuller understanding of what he is saying.) What does he mean?

5. What does Amaziah mean by saying "Off with you to the land of Judah!" And where does Amaziah say that Amos should never prophecy again? Find the place on the map above.

5. Amos here is being forced to defend himself. Why is he denying his identity as a prophet? And what might he hope to accomplish by claiming that he is not even a disciple of a prophet?

Heavenly Visions

(א) בִּשְׁנַת־מוֹת֙ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ עֻזִּיָּ֔הוּ וָאֶרְאֶ֧ה אֶת־אדושם יֹשֵׁ֥ב עַל־כִּסֵּ֖א רָ֣ם וְנִשָּׂ֑א וְשׁוּלָ֖יו מְלֵאִ֥ים אֶת־הַהֵיכָֽל׃ (ב) שְׂרָפִ֨ים עֹמְדִ֤ים ׀ מִמַּ֙עַל֙ ל֔וֹ שֵׁ֧שׁ כְּנָפַ֛יִם שֵׁ֥שׁ כְּנָפַ֖יִם לְאֶחָ֑ד בִּשְׁתַּ֣יִם ׀ יְכַסֶּ֣ה פָנָ֗יו וּבִשְׁתַּ֛יִם יְכַסֶּ֥ה רַגְלָ֖יו וּבִשְׁתַּ֥יִם יְעוֹפֵֽף׃

וָאֹמַ֖ר הִנְנִ֥י שְׁלָחֵֽנִי׃

(1) In the year that King Uzziah died, I beheld my Lord seated on a high and lofty throne; and the skirts of His robe filled the Temple. (2) Seraphs stood in attendance on Him. Each of them had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his legs, and with two he would fly.

(3) And one would call to the other, “Holy, holy, holy! The LORD of Hosts! His presence fills all the earth!” (4) The doorposts would shake at the sound of the one who called, and the House kept filling with smoke.

(5) I cried, “Woe is me; I am lost! For I am a man of unclean lips And I live among a people Of unclean lips; Yet my own eyes have beheld The King LORD of Hosts.

(6) Then one of the seraphs flew over to me with a live coal, which he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. (7) He touched it to my lips and declared, “Now that this has touched your lips, Your guilt shall depart And your sin be purged away. (8) Then I heard the voice of my Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?

And I said, “Here am I; send me.

7. Do you recognize anything from the above passage?

8. How would you describe Isaiah’s state of mind throughout this encounter? Do you think you would react similarly?

9. At one point, Isaiah reacts with fear – but he does not say exactly why. Why might you think?

Deliverance and Demolition

(ד) וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יקוק אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ (ה) בְּטֶ֨רֶם אצורך [אֶצָּרְךָ֤] בַבֶּ֙טֶן֙ יְדַעְתִּ֔יךָ וּבְטֶ֛רֶם תֵּצֵ֥א מֵרֶ֖חֶם הִקְדַּשְׁתִּ֑יךָ נָבִ֥יא לַגּוֹיִ֖ם נְתַתִּֽיךָ׃

(ו) וָאֹמַ֗ר אֲהָהּ֙ אדושם יקוק הִנֵּ֥ה לֹא־יָדַ֖עְתִּי דַּבֵּ֑ר כִּי־נַ֖עַר אָנֹֽכִי׃ (פ)

(ז) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יקוק אֵלַ֔י אַל־תֹּאמַ֖ר נַ֣עַר אָנֹ֑כִי כִּ֠י עַֽל־כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֶֽשְׁלָחֲךָ֙ תֵּלֵ֔ךְ וְאֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲצַוְּךָ֖ תְּדַבֵּֽר׃ (ח) אַל־תִּירָ֖א מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם כִּֽי־אִתְּךָ֥ אֲנִ֛י לְהַצִּלֶ֖ךָ נְאֻם־יקוק׃

(ט) וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח יקוק אֶת־יָד֔וֹ וַיַּגַּ֖ע עַל־פִּ֑י וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יקוק אֵלַ֔י הִנֵּ֛ה נָתַ֥תִּי דְבָרַ֖י בְּפִֽיךָ׃ (י) רְאֵ֞ה הִפְקַדְתִּ֣יךָ ׀ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֗ה עַל־הַגּוֹיִם֙ וְעַל־הַמַּמְלָכ֔וֹת לִנְת֥וֹשׁ וְלִנְת֖וֹץ וּלְהַאֲבִ֣יד וְלַהֲר֑וֹס לִבְנ֖וֹת וְלִנְטֽוֹעַ׃ (פ)

(4) The word of the LORD came to me: (5) Before I created you in the womb, I selected you; Before you were born, I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet concerning the nations.

(6) I replied: Ah, Lord GOD! I don’t know how to speak, For I am still a boy.

(7) And the LORD said to me: Do not say, “I am still a boy,” But go wherever I send you And speak whatever I command you. (8) Have no fear of them, For I am with you to deliver you —declares the LORD.

(9) The LORD put out His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me: Herewith I put My words into your mouth. (10) See, I appoint you this day Over nations and kingdoms: To uproot and to pull down, To destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.

10. Is there any essential difference between this narrative, and the others we saw above? In what way/s?

11. Once again, we see encounter fear. Though unlike the case of Isaiah, in this case, H" encourages Jeremiah, telling him to "Have no fear of them." Whom would Jeremiah fear? Why might he fear them?

After reflecting on all of the above, consider the following:

8. Are there any common denominators between these different narratives?

9. Do the prophets seem eager to receive this summoning? If not, why not?

10. Have you ever felt strongly compelled to act, and found yourself responding similarly to any of the above? If so, how so?

Final Reflection

15. In most of these cases, the Torah's narrator makes it quite clear to us as readers that H" indeed is the one calling out to these prophets. However, to the one being called, it is not always so obvious! Find I Kings 19:12. Copy it here, and in a few sentences, explain what this verse means to you and how it relates to this issue.

Have you ever felt the sense of being Called to do something significant? How did you respond? With doubt, like Samuel? With fear, like Isaiah? With confidence and conviction, like Amos? In another way entirely?
