And thou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all that you have... And these words, which. I command you this day, shall be upon thy heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shall speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you read down, and when you rise. How Jews see the book of Psalms:
  • It is the soul of religion that speaks in the psalms, accent of trust, joy, wonder, worship, doubt, fear and questioning
  • The daily food of the Jew
  • Sprang from the soul of the Jews based on experience and needs
General questions:
  • How do the Psalms differ in wording and message from our traditional liturgy or from other Biblical texts?
  • What role do they have and how do they fit into the service?

(1) A song of ascents. In my distress I called to the LORD and He answered me. (2) O LORD, save me from treacherous lips, from a deceitful tongue! (3) What can you profit, what can you gain, O deceitful tongue? (4) A warrior’s sharp arrows, with hot coals of broom-wood. (5) Woe is me, that I live with Meshech, that I dwell among the clans of Kedar. (6) Too long have I dwelt with those who hate peace. (7) I am all peace; but when I speak, they are for war.

Questions/Commentaries
  • What is the message of the psalmist?
  • Have you ever felt the way the speaker does?
  • What emotions are conveyed by the language?
  • What do you think could have happened to inspire these words?
Duties of the Heart, Sixth Treatise on Submission 6:9
  • Likewise, when one habituates his tongue to speak good, it will become part of his nature, as written "He who does not habituate/slander with his tongue" (Tehilim 15:3), and it says regarding the opposite of this "Your tongue devises mischief, [as a sharpened razor, working deceit], You love all devouring words" (Tehilim 52:4)
Who is the person that desires life, and loves each day, that sees good in all things? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. -- Psalm 34:13-15

Guardian of Israel – guard the remnants of the people of Israel. Let not disaster overcome Thy people of Israel who daily proclaim: “Hear, O Israel!”
Guardian of the chosen people, guard the remnants of these people, Let not disaster overcome these unique people who proclaim daily: “The Lord is our God, the Lord is One!”
Guardian of Thy holy people — guard the remnants of this nation. Let not disaster overcome these holy people who proclaim daily in their prayers threefold sanctifications to the Holy One. You who are propitiated by pleas for mercy and conciliated by supplications, be propitiated and conciliated to an afflicted generation, for there is no one else to help. Our Father, our King, be gracious to us and answer us. Even though we are without good deeds —for the sake of Your great
Name, be merciful with us and save us.

It is our duty to praise the Master of all, to offer greatness to the Fashioner of Creation, who has not made us like the nations of the land and who has not placed us like the families of the earth, who has not placed our portion with them, nor our lot with all their multitudes. We bow and prostrate and acknowledge the Ruler, Ruler of Rulers, the Holy One, Blessed be God!
God stretches out the heavens and establishes the earth (Isaiah 51:13); You are our God; there is none else. In truth You alone are our Sovereign God, as it is written in the Torah: Know this day and place it in your heart that Adonai is God in the heavens above and on the earth below; there is none else (Deuteronomy 4:39). And it has been said: Adonai be Ruler over all the earth; On that day Adonai shall be One and God’s name shall be One (Zechariah 14:9).

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 For God causes me to lie down in green pastures. God leads me beside still waters. 3 God restores my soul. God leads me in paths of righteousness for the sake of your Holy name. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
