Peshat - The 'plain' meaning
- It is a careful reading.
- It isn't simplistic
- It's based on text and context
- Constructed word by word and. action by action (including the specific meanings of words and names)
Remez - the 'hints' in the text
- Allusions found in the wording of the text that reveal spiritual meaning
- Often connected to the Hebrew (but we'll find some in English) using gemantria, acronyms, etc.
- Reveals moral or philosophical allegories
Derash - the 'interpretation'
- Seeking meaning in the text
- Far ranging expansion and explanation of the original text/context
- Encompasses theology, morality, religious practice, etc
- Creates relevant application of the text
Sod - the 'secret' insights
- Mystical, esoteric meanings
- Eternal spiritual truths intuited from the text
- May connect the Biblical to mystical texts
The boundaries between these four approaches often overlap and blur in actual practice

Havruta
Havruta, from the Aramaic word for 'friend' or 'companion' is a traditional rabbinic approach to Jewish text study where two people analyze a text together, looking at it deeply, then challenging and refining each others questions and insights
Havruta learning is a three way conversation between the two learners and the text. In this way, ancient texts are given voice and relevance from generation to generation
The three core pairs of havruta skills are:
- listening and articulating;
- wondering and focusing;
- supporting and challenging

- Read the study text to your havruta out loud.
- Ask a question. What do you notice about the text that invites exploration?
- Gently push your havruta to refine their idea (with each person having opportunities to answer and push).
- Leave your life in, not out, of the havruta learning.
- Get help, but don't let difficulties keep you from moving forward.
