Honesty, Integrity, and Truth
On a scale of one to ten, think(dont say)about how much honesty and integrity you have?
Define the terms integrity, honesty , and truth? How are they different? How do you say each in Hebrew? Why do humans usually lie, cheat, or steal?
While reading the pasukim in the source below, see if you can apply the 3 terms in the title of this sheet to the 13 mitzvot listed.

(11) Ye shall not steal; neither shall ye deal falsely, nor lie one to another. (12) And ye shall not swear by My name falsely, so that thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD. (13) Thou shalt not oppress thy neighbour, nor rob him; the wages of a hired servant shall not abide with thee all night until the morning. (14) Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling-block before the blind, but thou shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD. (15) Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment; thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor favour the person of the mighty; but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour. (16) Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people; neither shalt thou stand idly by the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD. (17) Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart; thou shalt surely rebuke thy neighbour, and not bear sin because of him.

(21) Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands... (22) And let them judge the people at all seasons...

(3) "men of truth"- These are trustworthy men, whom can be relied upon with their words- and as a result their words(verdicts) will be accepted.

Give an example from your own life that exemplifies the person that Rashi seems to describe. Do you know a person who you can totally rely on to never lie to you?

(15) A perfect and just weight shalt thou have; a perfect and just measure shalt thou have; that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. (16) For all that do such things, even all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the LORD thy God. (17) Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way as ye came forth out of Egypt; (18) how he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, all that were enfeebled in thy rear, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God.

what is the reward for being honest in business? What does Amalek have to do with this?

(6) And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed: ‘The LORD, the LORD, God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth;

Why does this famous list of God's 13 attributes of mercy include "truth"? If we must seek to emulate His ways, then what does this demand of us?
Ramchal, "Mesilat Yesharim" Our Sages of blessed memory have said (Shabbath 55a ), "The seal of the Holy One Blessed be He is truth." Indeed if the truth is what the Holy One Blessed be He selected as His seal, how abominable must its opposite be to Him.

(1) A Psalm of David. LORD, who shall sojourn in Thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell upon Thy holy mountain? (2) He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, And speaketh truth in his heart;

What do you think it means "to speak truth in your heart"?

(39)And our Sages of blessed memory have said (Makkoth 24a), " `And he speaks the truth in his heart' (Psalms 15:2), as R. Safra..." [Rashi explains: "This is the incident concerning R. Safra: he had a certain article to sell, but when someone approached him while he was reciting the Shema, and said to him, `Give me the article for so much and so much money,' he did not answer, being occupied in the recitation of the Shema. The latter, thinking that he did not want to give him the object for that sum, continued, `Give it to me for so much and so much more.' After completing the Shema, he said to him, `Take the article for the sum you originally stipulated, for I had intended to give it to you for that sum.' "] This to show how far one is duty-bound to be truthful, even to a non-Jew.

(34) Lying, too, is a terrible sickness that has spread far-reachingly among men. There are various levels of this sin. (35) There are some people whose profession itself is lying, who go around inventing stark falsehoods in order to promote social intercourse or to be reckoned among the wise and informed. In relation to them it is said (Proverbs 12:22), "The abomination of God is lying lips," and (Isaiah 59:3), "Your lips speak falsehood..."And our Sages of blessed memory have pronounced their judgment (Sotah 42a), "There are four classes of men who are not received into the presence of God." (The class of liars is numbered among the four).

-DOES THIS LAST SEGMENT SEEM TO TAKE ON MEANING FOR VAST PARTS OF OUR SOCIETY? HOW SO? WOULD YOU HAVE ACTED LIKE RAV SAFRA?

(38) There are others whose sickness is milder than that of the first type. The members of this group are not confirmed in falsehood, but do not take heed to withdraw from it, and speak it when the opportunity presents itself, and very often by way of jest and the like, with no evil intent. The Sage, however, has made it known to us that all of this is contrary to the will of the Creator, blessed be He, and to the attribute of His saints (Proverbs 13:5): "The righteous hate a false thing." And it is in relation to this that we were warned (Exodus 23:7), "Withdraw from a false thing." Note that we do not have, "Guard yourself from falsehood," but "Withdraw from a false thing," this to awaken us to the greatness of the extent to which one must withdraw himself and flee from falsehood....Truth is one of the pillars upon which the world stands [Avoth 1.18:Rabbi Shimon the son of Gamliel would say: By three things is the world sustained: law, truth and peace.] As is stated in Zechariah 8:16 "Truth, and a judgement of peace, you should administer at your [city] gates.'Speaking falsehood, then, is comparable to removing the foundation of the world; and, conversely, if one is heedful of the truth it is as if he maintains the world's foundation.

-HOW CAN ONE'S LACK OF INTEGRITY, HONESTY, AND TRUTH SHAKE THE FOUNDATION OF HIS OWN WORLD? HOW DOES POSSESSING THESE TRAITS PRACTICALY GIVE US A SOLID FOUNDATION FOR LIFE.
