Body & Soul

Story #1

The Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the first Chabad Rebbe) was once davening on Yom Kippur. When he reached the words "u'vchein tein pachdecha" (ובכן תן פחדך) - literally, "and thus you will place your fear" - he was unable to pronounce the entire word pachdecha (your fear). He rolled on the floor in ecstasy repeating "pach, pach," until he was eventually able to pronounce the entire word.

Story #2

The Tzemach Tzedek (3rd Chabad Rebbe) was once farbrenging with his chassidim. They brought him 90% alcohol to say l'chaim, and he drank an entire glass. Then he drank another glass, and instructed that they pour him a third glass. A while later, he wiped his hand across his forehead and it was no longer recognizable at all that he had imbibed so much alcohol.

He later explained that he had contemplated the greatness of G-d so deeply that he became afraid. As the gemora (Bava Basra 10a) indicates, "fear can make one become sober." His fear of the Almighty affected him physically.

Story #3

R. Menachem Nochum of Chernobyl became corpulent from reciting "amen yehei shmei rabba" with such great enthusiasm. He contemplated with such profundity the greatness of Hashem (shmei rabba), how Hashem is found in all the worlds, including our physical world, and he had such spiritual delight that he became fat.

Story #4

A grandson was born to the Tzemach Tzedek. There were two mohelim in town: one was an older, spiritually accomplished person, well-versed in the Kabbalistic kavanos. The other was much younger, not nearly as well-versed in mystical intentions, but he was an expert. The Tzemach Tzedek instructed that they should choose the younger mohel (despite not being as spiritually accomplished), because he has to make sure to actually do the cut properly!

וַתָּ֣מָת שָׂרָ֗ה בְּקִרְיַ֥ת אַרְבַּ֛ע הִ֥וא חֶבְר֖וֹן בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וַיָּבֹא֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם לִסְפֹּ֥ד לְשָׂרָ֖ה וְלִבְכֹּתָֽהּ׃
Sarah died in Kiriath-arba—now Hebron—in the land of Canaan; and Abraham proceeded to mourn for Sarah and to bewail her.

The Zohar says that Sarah represents the body, and Avraham represents the soul.

Kiryat Arba (literally, the area of four) represents the 4 elements.

Thus:

And Sarah died -- the person passes away

In Kiryat Arba -- the four elements that comprise reality are no longer..

It is Chevron -- connected

And Avraham came -- the body comes

To mourn for Sarah and to cry for her -- to cry for the soul, because even after death, the soul is connected to the body.

Why would the soul mourn over the body?

...כֹּל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר תֹּאמַ֥ר אֵלֶ֛יךָ שָׂרָ֖ה שְׁמַ֣ע בְּקֹלָ֑הּ...

But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed over the boy or your slave; whatever Sarah tells you, do as she says, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be continued for you.

Why would Hashem tell Avraham (the soul) to listen to Sarah (the body)?
