(א) וַיְהִ֗י אַחַר֙ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה וְהָ֣אֱלֹקִ֔ים נִסָּ֖ה אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו אַבְרָהָ֖ם וַיֹּ֥אמֶר הִנֵּֽנִי׃ (ב) וַיֹּ֡אמֶר קַח־נָ֠א אֶת־בִּנְךָ֨ אֶת־יְחִֽידְךָ֤ אֲשֶׁר־אָהַ֙בְתָּ֙ אֶת־יִצְחָ֔ק וְלֶךְ־לְךָ֔ אֶל־אֶ֖רֶץ הַמֹּרִיָּ֑ה וְהַעֲלֵ֤הוּ שָׁם֙ לְעֹלָ֔ה עַ֚ל אַחַ֣ד הֶֽהָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֹמַ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ׃
(1) Some time afterward, God put Abraham to the test. He said to him, “Abraham,” and he answered, “Hineni.” (2) And He said, “Take your son, your favored one, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the heights that I will point out to you.”
1) Recognizing the Other
Genesis 22:1-2
- Why does Abraham respond, “Hineni”–indicating his willingness to act–when the task is not yet defined by God?
- Why is this the first time that Hineni is used, even though God has spoken to and called to Abraham many times up to this point?
- In what way does Abraham experience God’s call as a “trial”? Have you experienced a request by an other in your life as a trial or a test?
2) Being Accessible to the Other
Genesis 22:6-8
- What is the significance of Abraham using the very same word–Hineni–to respond to Isaac that he used in responding to God? What does this say to you?
- Isaac calls out, “my father,” and Abraham reciprocates by saying, “my son.” What does this communicate? Have you responded to someone like that?
- Why is this the only interchange between father and son on the three-day journey to the mountain? What else might have transpired during the journey?
3) Awakening to Relationship
Genesis 22:9-12
- Why is it an angel who calls to Abraham here and not God?
- Why is there a double calling on Abraham’s name at this moment? Can you think of circumstances when you have called to someone you love more than once?
- Put yourself in Isaac’s place. What are Isaac’s feelings? What does he say to his father?

(6) Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on his son Isaac. He himself took the firestone and the knife; and the two walked off together. (7) Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father!” And he answered, “Hineni, my son.” And he said, “Here are the firestone and the wood; but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” (8) And Abraham said, “God will see to the sheep for His burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them walked on together.

(9) They arrived at the place of which God had told him. Abraham built an altar there; he laid out the wood; he bound his son Isaac; he laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Abraham!” And he answered, “Hineni.” (12) And he said, “Do not raise your hand against the boy, or do anything to him.
