"גט"'ing a Second Chance

The Torah describes a document used to divorce a woman from a man known as "Sefer Crisoos". What was the intention of the Rabbis to recreate another name for the same document, known as a Get?

(19) As soon as Moses came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, he became enraged; and he hurled the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain.

Who gave authority to Moshe allowing him to break the Luchos?

(3) R. Akiba stated: The Holy One, blessed be He, told him to break them. Our sages were of the opinion that while the writing was on the tablets Moses did not feel their weight, but when the writing flew away, they became heavy in his hands and he dropped them and they were broken.

Interestingly, we find that in the 1st set of Luchos, only 21 of the 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet are written. The one letter left off is the "Tet"

(4) God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.

The first time that the letter "Tet" appears in the Torah is in the word "Tov". Hence, the essence of the letter "Tet" is encompassed by "Tov"

Having discussed some differences between the two versions of the Ten Commandments, the Gemara now discuses a related matter: Rabbi Ḥanina ben Agil asked Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Abba: For what reason is the word good not stated in the first version of the Ten Commandments, whereas in the second version the word טוב is written in the 5th Commandment of honouring one's parents, "לְמַ֙עַן֙ יִ֣יטַב לָ֔ךְ"

...It does not mention the word good in the first tablets, since they were ultimately destined to be broken after the Jews made the Golden Calf. The Gemara asks: And even if it had mentioned the term good, and they were ultimately destined to break, so what? Rav Ashi said: If this term had been mentioned in the first tablets, all good would have, God forbid, ceased from Israel once they were broken. Therefore, only the second version, which was written after the breaking of the tablets, contains the word good, so that there would always be good for the Jewish people.

Therefore, for the sake of keeping the "Good" amongst Israel, Hashem removed every "Tet" that would potentially appear in the Commandments.

With this all-important message in mind...

(3) When the Creator thought to create the world, all the letters of the alphabet came to Him in reverse order from last to first.

(6) The letter Tet entered and said: “Maker of the world, it would be good to create the world with me, for it is by me that You are called Tov.” The Creator replied: “I will not create the world by you, for your goodness is concealed within you and is invisible. Therefore, it cannot take any part in the world that I wish to create, and will only be revealed in the world to come.

As the Shvilei Pinchas explains, the letter "tet" is designed as such that the top right tip leans inward towards the middle, signifying its concealment of something - in this case, its goodness.

Thus, we can now understand the establishment of the word "Get" by the Rabonon: "Get" is made up of two hebrew letters, the gimmel and the tet. On the surface, a get appears to be something inherently negative as it takes a united couple in Klal Yisroel and literally "cuts" them from each other, as the term "Sefer Crisoos" implies. However, on the other hand, the get has a tet of concealed goodness, which is that a man and a woman now have the ability for a fresh start, a chance to redeem previously committed mistakes, and create a new path for themselves with the wisdom they have now acquired. If not for a Get, a man and woman would have no choice but to remain together forever, despite any past wrong decisions. Therefore, the Rabbis created a new word, a new philosophy on what a Get is, using the all-important Tes, representing the Tov of the Jewish People that Hashem maintained within us by leaving it out of the first Tablets that were ultimately destroyed.
