Starting the Day off Right Modeh Ani-

I offer thanks to You, living and eternal King, for You have mercifully restored my soul within me; Your faithfulness is great.

Modeh Ani -

I yield

(13) He that covereth his transgressions shall not prosper; But whoso confesseth (admits) and forsaketh them shall obtain mercy.

In hebrew if someone says "Ani Modeh" it means that they admit you are correct/ yield to your opinion

Modeh Ani is us saying to Hashem that we are starting our day off with the knowledge that Hashem is the All Powerful One (and we will allow that to have an influence in the way we go about our day).

Lefanecha -

to Your illuminating presence

Lefancha 'before you' comes from the root Panim 'face'

(22) So the present passed over before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp.

(25) The LORD make His face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee;

Melech-

reigning influence

We said Modeh Ani, that we will yield to another opinion (other then our own). Melech is explaining WHO'S influence and ideas we will yield to.

What is the will/ opinion that we are saying we are going to yield to? what is the "Will of G-D"?

(35) For whoso findeth me findeth life, And obtaineth favour of the LORD.

Chai Vkayam -

dynamic and firmly standing

The word Chai means 'alive' but this doesn't only refer to the organic form (as in a person is living) it also means dynamic, animating, and possessing energy (when we say "that person is lively" we are not saying that are alive we are saying that they are energetic)

(15) Thou art a fountain of gardens, A well of living waters, And flowing streams from Lebanon.

Kayam means standing/ established. Here we are Saying that Hashem is the King who is established and reigning over us and that He is where our influence comes from.

She-he-chezarta bee nishmatee b’chemla -

that You returned my consciousness within me, out of the desire to spare/keep me alive

What is our Neshama?

It can't be our breath because we know that we are still breathing when we are sleeping. Here Neshama means consciousness.

*Neshama // Ruach

... The Neshama is found within the mind....

Rabba Emunatecha -
