(16) And in the first day there shall be to you a holy convocation, and in the seventh day a holy convocation; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done by you.
There is no difference between yom to and shabbat save "that which every man must eat"
Rav Pappi said to Rav Pappa: "What is your opinion on the statement: because it has been permitted for permissible purposes it is also permitted for other purposes that we learn it from this case: It is permissible to burn incense (spices) on Yom Tov because, the fire was permitted for (permitted) needs it is permitted for other needs."
He (Rav Pappa) said to him: the verse states (Shemot 12:16) "save that which every man must eat" only that which is equal to all may be done.
Because carrying was permitted for the purposes of eating, it is permitted for other purposes as well, such as a child, a lulav, a sefer torah and utensils. REMA: as long as there is any small need, or if he fears an object will be stolen or lost for any reason. However stones and other such things are forbidden. REMA: It is permitted to play ball even in the public domain even though it is only a tiyul (only for pleasure) if there is an eiruv one can carry anything that is a utensil even if there is no yom tov need.
