The story of the golden calf raises so many big questions:
1. Why did the Israelites build a golden calf so soon after they heard God directly command not to build any idols?
2. What was the purpose of the calf? Was it intended to be an idol or did it have some other purpose?
כי בשש משה. מאחר לבא כמו (שופטים ה') מדוע בשש רכבו לבא, אמרו לא יבא עוד:
Moshe was delayed in coming. A similar word (boshesh) is found in Judges 5, "why does his chariot delay."
They said he will never return.
Why did Moshe's delay lead them to think that he was dead? People are late all the time and eventually show up!
ויקהל העם על אהרן: העם נקהל על אהרן ובקשו ממנו בחזקה שיעשה להם אלהים, והוא ראה שאם לא יעשה שאלתם יהרגוהו ואח"כ יעשו מה שירצו, ואז מה תועיל מיתתו? ובהפך בהיותו בחיים עלתה בידו להפריעם במחולות באופן שלא תהיה מלחמה במחנה ...
The people gathered against Aharon and requested from him with great force that he make a god for them. And he saw that if he did not do as was asked they will kill him and then do whatever they wished afterwards and so his death would not accomplish anything. And, on the contrary, if he did as they wishes he would have the possibility of distracting them through dancing and thereby prevent a war from breaking out within the camp...
Was Aharon' motivation good? Do you sympathize with the tough decision he had to make? Can you think of a time when you had to decide between two bad options?
וירא העם כי בושש משה, כבר האריכו בזה חכמי קדם למצוא למוד זכות על ישראל אשר היו לשמצה בקמיהם, ואשר גם בעירנו יפלא איך אחר שראו בעיניהם את כל מעשה ה' הגדול אשר עשה לעיניהם, ואחרי שמעו קול אלהים חיים מדבר מתוך האש לא תעשה לך פסל וכל תמונה, השחיתו התעיבו מעלליהם וישתחוו לתבנית שור אוכל עשב... ובאשר רצו מנהיג שילך לפניהם, ובתחלה בעת המסע הלך לפניהם ה' בעמוד אש וענן והיה הכבוד מוחש ע"י האש והענן, ועתה שעמדו במק"א היה הענן והאש בראש ההר וחשבו שלא ינהיגם עוד בעת המסע, ורצו מנהיג אחר, רצו לעשות בדרך החכמה כעין טלמס שבו ישכון ה', וידוע שענני הכבוד היו בזכות אהרן, לפ"ז הכבוד שהתלבש בצורה מוחשת היה בכחו של אהרן, לכן בקהלו לתכלית זה על אהרן. ויאמרו קום עשה לנו אלהים אשר ילכו לפניני, בארו בפירוש שאינם רוצים אלהים לעבדו, שע"ז לא היה להם לומר כי זה משה האיש וכו', רק רוצים מנהיג שינהיגם כמו שמשה היה מנהיג אותם וה' ישכין שכינתו ואלהותו עליו כמו ששכן על משה בעידו מלובש בגויה...
The earlier sages have already gone to great lengths to find a defense of the Israelites...and so too in our times some wonder how it could be that after they saw with their own eyes all of God's great actions and after they heard the voice of the living God speak from the midst of the fire and say "you shall not make any form or image" the Israelites then went and acted in a corrupt and wicked way and made an image of a grass-eating cow.
They wanted a leader who would walk in front of them for when they first left Egypt God walked in front of them in the pillar of fire and teh cloud and now those were located someplace else since the cloud and fire were at the top of Mt. Sinai and the people thought that they would no longer guide them during their future journeys and they wanted another leader who would guide them in their journey...they did not request a God to worship for if that is what they wanted they would not have mentioned Moshe being gone. They wanted a leader just as Moshe had lead them and they wanted god's presence to again dwell among them.
Can you explain the purpose of the golden calf according to the Malbim? Do you agree with this interpretation? Does this make it easier to understand the story?
