What is Tzedakah?

You shall not have in your pocket this stone and that stone, large and small. You shall not have in your house this measure and that measure, large and small. A whole and tzedek weight shall you have; a whole and tzedek measure shall you have; so that your days may be long upon the land which the Eternal your God gives you. For all who do such things, even all that do unrighteously, are an abomination to the Eternal your God.

Shalt your reign, because you strive to excel in cedar? Your father, did he not father eat and drink, and do justice and tzedakah? It was good with him. He judged the cause of the poor and needy; Then it was good. Is not this to know Me? says the Eternal.

And now, stand that I may plead with you before the Eternal concerning all the tzedakot of the Eternal, which God did to you and to your ancestors.

And Avraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed through him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of the Eternal, to do tzedakah and justice; so that the Eternal may bring upon Abraham that which God has spoken of him.’

These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a tzadik man, he was wholehearted in his generations; Noah walked with God.

And Abraham drew near, and said: ‘Will You indeed finish off the tzadik with the wicked? Perhaps there are fifty tzadikim within the city; will You indeed finish them off and not forgive the place for the fifty tzadikim that are within? Far be it from You to do something like this, to kill the tzadik with the wicked, that so the tzadik should be as the wicked; far be it from You; shall not the judge of all the earth do justice?’

(11) Beware lest you forget the Eternal you God, in not keeping God's commandments, ordinances, and statutes, which I command you this day; (12) lest when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses, and live in them; (13) and when your herds and flocks multiply, and your silver and gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; (14) then your heart should become haughty, and you forget the Eternal your God... (17) and you say in your heart: ‘My power and the might of my hand has gained me this wealth.’ (18) But you shall remember the Eternal your God, for it is God that gives you power to gain wealth, that God may establish God's covenant which God swore unto ancestors, as it is this day.
