(18) His brothers went to him themselves, flung themselves before him, and said, “We are prepared to be your slaves.” (19) But Joseph said to them, “Have no fear! Am I a substitute for God? (20) Besides, although you intended me harm, God intended it for good, so as to bring about the present result—the survival of many people. (21) And so, fear not. I will sustain you and your children.” Thus he reassured them, speaking kindly to them.
Why do you think JPS translated the words וַיְנַחֵ֣ם אוֹתָ֔ם וַיְדַבֵּ֖ר עַל־לִבָּֽם as "he reassured them, speaking kindly to them" when its direct translation is "he comforted them and spoke to their hearts"? What is the difference?
What does it mean that Joseph spoke kindly to his brothers?
RASHI...spoke to their hearts...Convincing words. Before you came down here, they (the Egyptians) were spreading rumors about me that I was a slave. Through you, it became known that I am a free man. Now if I kill you, what will people say? “He (Joseph) saw a group of young men and glorified himself through them by saying, ‘They are my brothers’ and at the end he killed them. Is there such a thing as a brother who kills his brothers?” (Gen. Rabbah 100:9)
RASHI...spoke to their hearts...If ten candles could not extinguish one candle, [how can one candle extinguish ten candles?] (Meg. 16b).

Why does this matter to us today?
Many times, our fears, preconceived notions, or anger keep us from hearing what someone else has to say. Joseph has to make sure that he reaches in and touches them so that they can really hear what he is saying. Sure, he starts out by saying, you really meant to do some bad things, but then he explains his position now. Joseph is also letting them know that he recognizes there is only so much he can do, that it is really in God's hands. With all of that said, we should take a note from Joseph and recognize that while we don't always understand the reasoning behind events, that it is our responsibility to make sure we act justly and try to comfort others with our words.
