(לה) וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אָֽכְל֤וּ אֶת־הַמָּן֙ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה עַד־בֹּאָ֖ם אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ נוֹשָׁ֑בֶת אֶת־הַמָּן֙ אָֽכְל֔וּ עַד־בֹּאָ֕ם אֶל־קְצֵ֖ה אֶ֥רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן׃ (לו) וְהָעֹ֕מֶר עֲשִׂרִ֥ית הָאֵיפָ֖ה הֽוּא׃ (פ)
(א) וַ֠יִּסְעוּ כָּל־עֲדַ֨ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל מִמִּדְבַּר־סִ֛ין לְמַסְעֵיהֶ֖ם עַל־פִּ֣י ה' וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ בִּרְפִידִ֔ים וְאֵ֥ין מַ֖יִם לִשְׁתֹּ֥ת הָעָֽם׃ (ב) וַיָּ֤רֶב הָעָם֙ עִם־מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ תְּנוּ־לָ֥נוּ מַ֖יִם וְנִשְׁתֶּ֑ה וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ מֹשֶׁ֔ה מַה־תְּרִיבוּן֙ עִמָּדִ֔י מַה־תְּנַסּ֖וּן אֶת־ה'
(1) And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their stages, according to the commandment of the LORD, and encamped in Rephidim; and there was no water for the people to drink. (2) Wherefore the people strove with Moses, and said: ‘Give us water that we may drink.’ And Moses said unto them: ‘Why strive ye with me? wherefore do ye try the LORD?’
Miracles have a short shelf life
(א) שְׁמַ֣ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אַתָּ֨ה עֹבֵ֤ר הַיּוֹם֙ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן לָבֹא֙ לָרֶ֣שֶׁת גּוֹיִ֔ם גְּדֹלִ֥ים וַעֲצֻמִ֖ים מִמֶּ֑ךָּ עָרִ֛ים גְּדֹלֹ֥ת וּבְצֻרֹ֖ת בַּשָּׁמָֽיִם׃
(1) Hear, O Israel: thou art to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,
(יא) דבר אחר: אתה עובר היום את הירדן אמר להם: כשתעברו את הירדן דברים אחרים יתחדשו, לא תהיו סבורין, כשם שהייתם במדבר והייתם חוטאים והייתי מבקש עליכם רחמים. אמר להן: כשעשיתם אותו המעשה וביקש הקב"ה לכלות אתכם, לא נתפללתי עליכם סניגוריה.
Another explanation: Thou art pass over the Jordan this day. Moses said to Israel: 'When you shall have passed the Jordan, a number of things will be different; do not think that it will be just like when you were in the wilderness where I prayed for you whenever you sinned.' He further said to them: 'Did I not plead in your defense when you did the [unspeakable] act and God desired to destroy you?'
(יב) ... כיון שעשו ישראל אותו מעשה, נטלן ושיברן... אמר לו הקב"ה: אתה היית סרסור ביני לבין בני, אתה שברת - אתה מחליף...
...When Israel did the deed of shame (the Golden Calf) he took hold of the tablets and broke them... God said to Moses, "You were the intermediary between Me and My children; you broke the tablets, and you must replace them."...
(ברים י, ב) אשר שברת ושמתם בארון תני רב יוסף מלמד שהלוחות ושברי לוחות מונחין בארון מכאן לתלמיד חכם ששכח תלמודו מחמת אונסו שאין נוהגין בו מנהג בזיון
Which thou didst break, and thou shalt put them in the ark. R. Joseph learnt: This teaches us that both the tablets and the fragments of the tablets were deposited in the ark. Hence [we learn that] a scholar who has forgotten his learning through no fault of his must not be treated with disrespect.
Both sets of tablets were placed in the ark - holiness in our brokeness
