וְכֵן בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁאָמַר לוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא (שמות כה, ח): וְעָשׂוּ לִי מִקְדָּשׁ וְשָׁכַנְתִּי בְּתוֹכָם, אָמַר משֶׁה מִי יוּכַל לַעֲשׂוֹת לוֹ מִקְדָּשׁ שֶׁיִּשְׁרֶה בְּתוֹכוֹ, (מלכים א ח, כז): הִנֵּה הַשָּׁמַיִם וּשְׁמֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם לֹא יְכַלְכְּלוּךָ וגו'...
אָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אֵינִי מְבַקֵּשׁ, לְפִי כֹּחִי אֶלָּא לְפִי כֹּחָן, כְּשֶׁאֲנִי מְבַקֵּשׁ כָּל הָעוֹלָם כֻּלּוֹ אֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לְהַחֲזִיק כְּבוֹדִי וְלֹא שֶׁמֶשׁ אֶחָד מִשֶּׁלִּי, אֶלָּא אֲנִי אֵינִי מְבַקֵּשׁ מִיָּדְךָ אֶלָּא עֶשְׂרִים בַּדָּרוֹם וְעֶשְׂרִים בַּצָּפוֹן וּשְׁמוֹנֶה בַּמַּעֲרָב.
When the Holy Blessed One said to him (Moses), "Have them make me a sanctuary and I will dwell among them" (Exodus 25:8), Moses said, "Who can make Him a sanctuary within which He might reside? 'Behold the heavens and the heavens of heavens cannot contain You'" (I Kings 8:27)...
The Holy Blessed One said, "I do not request [that they build it] according to (to match) My power but rather their power. If I were to request the entire world, it could not contain My presence or even a single one of my attendants. Rather, I only request from you 20 [boards] in the south, 20 in the north, and 8 in the west."
אמר איוב הלכתי לכל מקום לבקש אותו ולא מצאתי אותו...אמר לו הקדוש ברוך הוא מה [אתה] חוזר ומתייגע הריני נגלה עליך אמור (לו) [לי] מהיכן אני נגלה עליך העליונים והתחתונים אינם מחזיקים כבודו של הקב"ה וצמצם עצמו לתוך הסערה ויען ה' את איוב מן השערה (שם ל"ח א') ד"א מכל שיער ושער שבראשו
Job said, "I went everywhere to seek Him and did not find Him..." The Holy Blessed One said to him, "Why do you keep wearing yourself out [looking for me]? For I will reveal Myself to you. [Just] tell me where to reveal myself to you." Above and below cannot contain the presence of the Holy Blessed One, [so] He contracted Himself into the whirlwind (se'arah with a samekh). "Adonai answered Job from the whirlwind (se'arah with a samekh)." (Job 38:1)
Another version, [God answered him] from every hair (se'arah with a sin) on his head.
רַבִּי יְהוֹשֻׁעַ דְּסִכְנִין בְּשֵׁם רַבִּי לֵוִי לְמָה הָיָה אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד דּוֹמֶה, לִמְעָרָה שֶׁהָיְתָה סְמוּכָה לַיָּם, גָּעַשׁ הַיָּם וְהֵצִיף אֶת הַמְּעָרָה, הַמְּעָרָה נִתְמַלְּאָה וְהַיָּם לֹא נֶחְסַר כְּלוּם. כָּךְ אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד נִתְמַלֵּא מִזִּיו הַשְּׁכִינָה, וְהָעוֹלָם לֹא חָסַר מִן הַשְּׁכִינָה...
Rabbi Yehoshua' of Sakhnin [said] in the name of Rabbi Levi, "To what may the Tent of Meeting be compared? To a cave by the sea. The sea sweeps in and floods the cave. [Then] the cave is full of water but the sea misses nothing (it is no less full). So (similarly) the Tent of Meeting is filled with the brilliance of the Shekhinah (God's presence dwelling among people) but the [rest of the] world contains not less Shekhinah than before...
