The Sages taught: The mitzva of Hanukkah is a light for a person, and his household. And the mehadrin, kindle a light for each and every one. And the mehadrin min hamehadrin, Beit Shammai say: On the first day one kindles eight and, from there on, gradually decreases. And Beit Hillel say: On the first day one kindles one , and from there on, gradually increases.
מתני׳ ואלו אידיהן של עובדי כוכבים קלנדא וסטרנורא וקרטיסים ויום גנוסיא של מלכיהם ויום הלידה ויום המיתה
MISHNA: And these are the festivals of gentiles: Kalenda, Saturnalia, and Kratesis, and the day of the festival of their kings, and the birthday of the king, and the anniversary of the day of the death of the king.

The Sages taught: When the first Adam saw that the day was progressively diminishing, he said: Woe is me; perhaps because I sinned the world is becoming dark around me and is returning to chaos and disorder. And this is the death that was sentenced upon me from Heaven. He arose and spent eight days in fasting and in prayer. Once he saw the season of Tevet, and saw that the day was progressively lengthening he said: this is the order of the world. He went and observed a festival for eight days. Upon the next year, he observed both as days of festivities. He, established these festivals for the sake of Heaven, but they, established them for the sake of idol worship.

אז יוכל להתהוות ממנו יש אחר בתוספת ברכה. כמשל הגרעין הנזרע בארץ, שצריך להיות נרקב בארץ ואחר כך יכול לצמוח מזה הרבה גרעינים. וכמו כן למעלה בנשמות ומלאכים, כדי שיהיה לו עלייה בתוספת השגה צריך מקודם להיות בחינת בטול היש והשגה ראשונה שהיה לו, ואחר כך יוכל לעלות השגה יותר גדולה. וזהו בחינת עמוד שבין גן עדן התחתון לגן עדן העליון הוא בחינת בטול, כנזכר לעיל.
וזהו ״כל בעלי השיר יוצאין״ בהשגתם ונמשכים לעלות למעלה על ידי השיר, ולכן בשעת הקרבת הקרבן היה צריך להיות גם כן שיר כי ענין הקרבנות הוא העלאה ממטה למעלה ״אשה ריח ניחוח״ וצריך לזה גם כן בחינת שיר, בחינת בטול כנזכר לעיל שיוכל להתעלות...
זהו ענין יובל אבי כל תופש כנור וכו׳. פירוש יובל לשון הולכה שמוביל
וממשיך למעלה על ידי כנור ועוגב, בחינת שיר כנזכר לעיל, שעל ידי השיר הוא העלייה יוצאין בשיר.

And his brother’s name was Yuval; he was the ancestor of all who play the lyre and the pipe (Gen 4:21).
Our sages taught: “All [animals] that are led by a chain (sher), [may] leave [for a public space] with a chain [on Shabbat]” (m. Shabbat 5:1).
Whenever something rises from one state of being to another, for example when [a soul] ascends from the lower to the higher Garden of Eden, this comes about through song (shir), for song allows existence to be nullified. It is known that anything that exists cannot become a different thing unless it first becomes nothing. Then something new can come into existence with greater bounty than before. This may be compared to a seed planted in the ground. It has to decompose in order to bring forth a plant that will carry many seeds. It is the same at higher levels regarding [human] souls or angels. In order to rise to a greater attainment, you have to first go through nullification of what is, and of your current attainment. Only then can you ascend to something greater. The image of the pillar that connects the lower and higher Gan Eden symbolizes this nullification.
Thus: “all masters of song(shir),leave”their spiritual attainments and are drawn to a higher level “by means of song.” This is also the reason that sacrifices [in the Temple] were accompanied by song. The essence of the sacrifice is raising “the flame, the savory smell” from below to a higher level. This ascent calls for song, for nullification as explained previously....
This is the meaning of: Yuval... the ancestor of all who play the lyre and the pipe. The word Yuval implies flow, directing (movil) and drawing upwards by means of the lyre and the pipe. These allude to song, since all ascents happen through song, as we explained.
