A Man of The People

(א) בן זומא אומר:...איזהו מכֻבד? המכבד את הבריות, שנאמר: (שמואל א ב ל): "כי מכבדי אכבד ובזי יקלו".

(1) Ben Zoma says: ... Who is honored? He who honors the created beings, as it says, "For, those who honor Me, I will honor; and those who despise me will be held in little esteem" (I Samuel 2:30).

(18) Now mount Sinai was altogether on smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire; and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. (19) And when the voice of the horn waxed louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice. (20) And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, to the top of the mount; and the LORD called Moses to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. (21) And the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. (22) And let the priests also, that come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.’ (23) And Moses said unto the LORD: ‘The people cannot come up to mount Sinai; for thou didst charge us, saying: Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.’ (24) And the LORD said unto him: ‘Go, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee; but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest He break forth upon them.’ (25) So Moses went down unto the people, and told them.

(1) And God spoke all these words, saying:

Uncle Josh

Why did Hashem trick Moshe into going off of the mountain? Why couldn't he have been on top during the Aseret Hadibrot? Hashem did this to make sure that Moshe was among the people when they became a nation and he truly became their leader. Hashem was telling Moshe that although it seems like leadership is something that raises you above everyone, in actuality you must first be among them in order to truly become their leader.

(19) As in water face answereth to face, So the heart of man to man.

Rabbi Bunam said:

Why does the verse read "in water" and not "in a mirror?" Man can see his reflection in water only when he bends close to it, and the heart of man too must lean down to the heart of his fellow; then it will itself within his heart.

(14) And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. (15) So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the horn. (16) And it was so, as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart. (17) And they brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in its place, in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before the LORD. (18) And when David had made an end of offering the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts. (19) And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, both to men and women, to every one a cake of bread, and a cake made in a pan, and a sweet cake. So all the people departed every one to his house. (20) Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said: ‘How did the king of Israel get him honour to-day, who uncovered himself to-day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself! ’ (21) And David said unto Michal: ‘Before the LORD, who chose me above thy father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of the LORD, over Israel, before the LORD will I make merry. (22) And I will be yet more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight; and with the handmaids whom thou hast spoken of, with them will I get me honour.’ (23) And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.

Taking it L'Maaseh!!!!!

How could we relate to the kids in am echad in a way that better relates to them?

What are the boundaries and limits to relating to others? How far is too far?
