Dominion vs. Stewardship: Humans and the Earth
(26) And God said: ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.’

and they shall rule over the fish of the sea: Rabbi Chanina said, "if he merits it then [God says] have dominion, while if he does not merit, then [God says] he will be taken down." Rabbi Ya'akov of K'far Chanin said, "If [the human acts] in Our image and likeness [then] 'he will rule,' if [the human acts] not in Our image and likeness [then] 'and he will be taken down.' Rabbi Ya'akov of K'far Chanin said further, "the [righteous person] who is in Our image and likeness will come, and rule over [wicked people and animals] who are not in OUr image and likeness."

Heb. This expression contains both the meaning of ruling and the meaning of subservience. If he merits, he rules over the beasts and over the cattle. If he does not merit, he becomes subservient to them, and the beast rules over him. — [from Gen. Rabbah 8:12]

(28) And God blessed them; and God said unto them: ‘Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that creepeth upon the earth.’

"And subdue it:" He gave them the power and rulership over the earth; to do whatever they wanted with the beasts and the swarming animals and all of those that slither on the ground; and to build and to uproot and plant and to quarry copper from its hills and [to do things] similar to this. And this is [all] included in its stating (above, verse 26), "and over all the earth."

(15) And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to work it and to guard it.

(16) The heavens are the heavens of the LORD; But the earth hath He given to the children of men.

(19) When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding an axe against them; for thou mayest eat of them, but thou shalt not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of thee? (20) Only the trees of which thou knowest that they are not trees for food, them thou mayest destroy and cut down, that thou mayest build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall.
