מה עשה הקדוש ברוך הוא הביא יסורים על חזקיהו ואמר לו לישעיהו לך ובקר את החולה שנאמר בימים ההם חלה חזקיהו למות ויבא אליו ישעיהו בן אמוץ הנביא ויאמר אליו כה אמר ה׳ צבאות צו לביתך כי מת אתה ולא תחיה וגו׳ מאי כי מת אתה ולא תחיה מת אתה בעולם הזה ולא תחיה לעולם הבא אמר ליה מאי כולי האי אמר ליה משום דלא עסקת בפריה ורביה אמר ליה משום דחזאי לי ברוח הקדש דנפקי מינאי בנין דלא מעלו אמר ליה בהדי כבשי דרחמנא למה לך מאי דמפקדת איבעי לך למעבד ומה דניחא קמיה קודשא בריך הוא לעביד אמר ליה השתא הב לי ברתך אפשר דגרמא זכותא דידי ודידך ונפקי מנאי בנין דמעלו אמר ליה כבר נגזרה עליך גזירה אמר ליה בן אמוץ כלה נבואתך וצא כך מקובלני מבית אבי אבא אפילו חרב חדה מונחת על צוארו של אדם אל ימנע עצמו מן הרחמים
What did the Holy One, blessed be He, do? He brought sufferings upon Hezekiah and said to Isaiah, "Go and visit the sick" ; as it is said, "In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah, the prophet, the son of Amoz came to him and said to him. Thus saith the Lord, Set thy house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live" (Is. xxxviii. 1). What means "For thou shalt die, and not live"? — "for thou shalt die" in this world, "and not live" in the world to come. He asked him, "Why all this [severe punishment]?" He replied, "Because thou hast not performed the duty of begetting children. " Hezekiah said to him, "The reason is that I have seen by the aid of the Holy Spirit, that worthless children will issue from me." Isaiah asked him, "What hast thou to do with the secrets of the All-merciful? What thou hast been commanded thou shouldest perform, and let the Holy One, blessed be He, do whatever is pleasing to Him." Hezekiah said to him, "Then give me thy daughter; perhaps my merit and thine will have effect, and worthy children will issue from me." He replied, ["Lo, I have brought thee the message 'Set thy house in order' and thou sayest to me 'Give me thy daughter'!] The verdict [of death] has already been decreed against thee!" He said to him, "Son of Amoz, end thy prophecy and go! For thus has it been handed down to me from my forefather: Even if a sharp sword be laid upon a man's neck, let him not despair of [the divine] mercy."
