Jonah

Summary

G-d sent Jonah to the evil city of Nineveh to rebuke them. Jonah didn't want to so he instead took a boat from Joppa to Tarshish; on the boat, the water started to be very upset, and eventually the other sailors came to the conclusion it was his fault. He admitted it and told them to throw him overboard, which they did. G-d then sent a whale to swallow Jonah, and he prayed in the belly for three whole days before G-d let him out. He sent him to Tarshish again and this time Jonah went. He messaged that in 40 days they would be destroyed, and they immediately started mourning, they fasted, put on sackcloth, and sat in ashes. G-d saw them repenting and forgave them. Jonah was mad, as he had seen this coming and therefore didn't want to come. G-d then gave him a little booth in the dessert with a shady plant that Jonah enjoyed, but the next day G-d sent a worm to eat it and Jonah wanted to die. In the end, G-d asked Jonah why he had mourned for the plant he didn't work for, while G-d shouldn't care about Nineveh, with 120,000 people in it.

Why Was Jonah So Sad About G-d Forgiving Nineveh?

(1) This displeased Jonah greatly, and he was grieved.

(2) He prayed to the LORD, saying, “O LORD! Isn’t this just what I said when I was still in my own country? That is why I fled beforehand to Tarshish. For I know that You are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in kindness, renouncing punishment.
(3) Please, LORD, take my life, for I would rather die than live.”

(4) The LORD replied, “Are you that deeply grieved?”

(1) Isn't this just what I said. I know that if the nation repents, you will not destroy them, and I will be a liar in their eyes.

(1) Please, take my life. So I will not see the wickedness of Israel [as Nineveh will destroy the Northern Kingdom] like Moshe did, and therefore said "If your going to kill them, kill me".

(1) Please lord. Since He will ask you to take my soul away from me, because it is better for me to die than to see the loss of my people.

(1) Please lord, they did not repent, so they stayed and became a tribe of rebels to Israel, so now take my life, in Shani I caused this.
