(1) God spoke all these words, saying: (2) I the LORD am your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, the house of bondage: (3) You shall have no other gods besides Me. (4) You shall not make for yourself a sculptured image, or any likeness of what is in the heavens above, or on the earth below, or in the waters under the earth. (5) You shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I the LORD your God am an impassioned God, visiting the guilt of the parents upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generations of those who reject Me, (6) but showing kindness to the thousandth generation of those who love Me and keep My commandments. (7) You shall not swear falsely by the name of the LORD your God; for the LORD will not clear one who swears falsely by His name. (8) Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy. (9) Six days you shall labor and do all your work, (10) but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God: you shall not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, or your cattle, or the stranger who is within your settlements. (11) For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth and sea, and all that is in them, and He rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it. (12) Honor your father and your mother, that you may long endure on the land that the LORD your God is assigning to you. (13) You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
(13) When a man borrows [an animal] from another and it dies or is injured, its owner not being with it, he must make restitution. (14) If its owner was with it, no restitution need be made; but if it was hired, he is entitled to the hire. (15) If a man seduces a virgin for whom the bride-price has not been paid, and lies with her, he must make her his wife by payment of a bride-price. (16) If her father refuses to give her to him, he must still weigh out silver in accordance with the bride-price for virgins. (17) You shall not tolerate a sorceress. (18) Whoever lies with a beast shall be put to death. (19) Whoever sacrifices to a god other than the LORD alone shall be proscribed. (20) You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. (21) You shall not ill-treat any widow or orphan. (22) If you do mistreat them, I will heed their outcry as soon as they cry out to Me, (23) and My anger shall blaze forth and I will put you to the sword, and your own wives shall become widows and your children orphans. (24) If you lend money to My people, to the poor among you, do not act toward them as a creditor; exact no interest from them. (25) If you take your neighbor’s garment in pledge, you must return it to him before the sun sets; (26) it is his only clothing, the sole covering for his skin. In what else shall he sleep? Therefore, if he cries out to Me, I will pay heed, for I am compassionate.
(1) Hear this word which I intone As a dirge over you, O House of Israel...9 It is G-d who hurls destruction upon strongholds, So that ruin comes upon fortresses! (10) They hate the arbiter in the gate, And detest him whose plea is just. (11) Assuredly, Because you impose a tax on the poor And exact from him a levy of grain, You have built houses of hewn stone, But you shall not live in them; You have planted delightful vineyards, But shall not drink their wine. (12) For I have noted how many are your crimes, And how countless your sins— You enemies of the righteous, You takers of bribes, You who subvert in the gate The cause of the needy! (13) Assuredly, At such a time the prudent man keeps silent, For it is an evil time. (14) Seek good and not evil, That you may live, And that the LORD, the God of Hosts, May truly be with you, As you think. (15) Hate evil and love good, And establish justice in the gate; Perhaps the LORD, the God of Hosts, Will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
(16) Assuredly, Thus said the LORD, My Lord, the God of Hosts: In every square there shall be lamenting, In every street cries of “Ah, woe!” And the farmhand shall be Called to mourn, And those skilled in wailing To lament; (17) For there shall be lamenting In every vineyard, too, When I pass through your midst —said the LORD. (18) Ah, you who wish For the day of the LORD! Why should you want The day of the LORD? It shall be darkness, not light!— (19) As if a man should run from a lion And be attacked by a bear; Or if he got indoors, Should lean his hand on the wall And be bitten by a snake! (20) Surely the day of the LORD shall be Not light, but darkness, Blackest night without a glimmer. (21) I loathe, I spurn your festivals, I am not appeased by your solemn assemblies. If you offer Me burnt offerings—or your meal offerings— I will not accept them; I will pay no heed To your gifts of (22)fatlings. (23) Spare Me the sound of your hymns, And let Me not hear the music of your lutes. (24) But let justice well up like water, Righteousness like an unfailing stream. (25) Did you offer sacrifice and oblation to Me Those forty years in the wilderness, O House of Israel? (26) And you shall carry off your “king”— Sikkuth and Kiyyun, The images you have made for yourselves Of your astral deity— (27) As I drive you into exile beyond Damascus —Said the LORD, whose name is God of Hosts.
