"He Turned the Mountain Upon Them Like a Barrel" - Fear and Love in the Revelation at Sinai

(ז) וַיִּקַּח֙ סֵ֣פֶר הַבְּרִ֔ית וַיִּקְרָ֖א בְּאָזְנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר ה' נַעֲשֶׂ֥ה וְנִשְׁמָֽע׃

Exodus 24:7

(7) And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the hearing of the people; and they said: ‘All that the Lord hath spoken will we do, and obey.’

Shabbat 88a:5

"And they stood at the bottom of the mountain (Exodus 19:17)-" Rabbi Avdimi the son of Chama the son of Chasa said, "This teaches that the Holy One, Blessed be He, held the mountain over them like a barrel and said, 'If you accept the Torah, it is good. And if not, here shall be your graves.'" Rav Acha Bar Yaakov said, "From here there is a great claim against the Torah!" Rav said, "Even so, they accepted it again [willingly] in the days of Ahasuerus, as it is written, (Esther 9:27) 'They upheld and accepted' - they upheld what they already accepted."

כפה עליהן הר כגיגית. ואע"פ שכבר הקדימו נעשה לנשמע שמא יהיו חוזרים כשיראו האש הגדולה שיצאתה נשמתן

Tosafot on Shabbat 88a:5:1

"He held the mountain over them like a barrel" - Even though they had already said “We will do and we will listen,” perhaps they retracted when they saw the great fire [on the mountain] that caused their souls to depart...

מדרש תנחומא א׳:ב׳:ג׳

ואם תאמר על התורה שבכתב כפה עליהם את ההר והלא משעה שאמר להן מקבלין אתם את התורה, ענו כלם ואמרו נעשה ונשמע מפני שאין בה יגיעה וצער והיא מעט אלא אמר להן על התורה שבע"פ שיש בה דקדוקי מצות קלות וחמורות והיא עזה כמות וקשה כשאול קנאתה...

And if you say that regarding the Written Law G-d forced the mountain upon them, behold from the moment that He said to them, “do you accept the Torah?, “ they all answered and said, “we will do and we will listen”--for it does not involve tireless effort and pain, and it is a little. Rather, he [forced it upon them] regarding the Oral Law, as it contains the details of the easy and difficult laws and is strong as death and its jealousy is as harsh as Geihinom...

Mekhilta DeRabbi Yishmael, Tractate Bachodesh 5:1-4

Rebbe said: This is to convey the praise of Israel, for when they all stood upon Mount Sinai to receive the Torah - they all accepted it with a single heart to receive the kingdom of heaven joyously... "I am Hashem your God" - Why is this stated? Because He appeared to them upon the sea as a warrior who fights, as it says: "Hashem is a man of war": He appeared upon Mount Sinai as an elder full of mercy...

Under the apple tree I awakened you. Palatyon of Rome expounded and said: Mount Sinai was detached and stood in the heavens, and the Jews were placed underneath it, as it says (Deuteronomy 4), "And they approached and stood under the mountain."
