(יב) כַּבֵּ֥ד אֶת־אָבִ֖יךָ וְאֶת־אִמֶּ֑ךָ לְמַ֙עַן֙ יַאֲרִכ֣וּן יָמֶ֔יךָ עַ֚ל הָאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽךְ׃ (ס)
(כד) חַיָּב אָדָם לְכַבֵּד חָמִיו. הַגָּה: יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים דְּאֵין אָדָם חַיָּב בִּכְבוֹד אֲבִי אָבִיו (מהרי''ק שֹׁרֶשׁ מ''ד). וְאֵינוֹ נ''ל, אֶלָּא דְּחַיָּב בִּכְבוֹד אָבִיו יוֹתֵר מִכְּבוֹד אֲבִי אָבִיו (וּרְאָיָה מִמִּדְרָשׁ גַּבֵּי וַיִּזְבַּח זְבָחִים וגו' (בראשית מו, א) ).
(24) ...A person is obligated to honour his father-in-law. Rema: There are some that say, that a person is not obligated to honour his grandfather, but this does not appear correct to me. Rather he is obligated in the honouring of his father more than that of his grandfather (and we can see that from the midrash on Gen 46:1 - Jacob offers sacrifices to the God of his father Issac - not Abraham).
(ז) ויצא משה לקראת חתנו. אמרו, יצא משה אהרן נדב ואביהוא ושבעים מזקני ישראל [ואחריהם כל ישראל,] ויש אומרים, אף שכינה יצאת עמהם.
(ח) וישתחו וישק לו. איני יודע, מי השתחוה למי, או מי נשק למי, כשהוא אומר: וישאלו איש לרעהו לשלום, מי קרוי איש, הלא משה, שנא' (במדבר יב) והאיש משה עניו מאד, הוי אומר, לא השתחוה ולא נשק אלא משה לחמיו, מכאן אמרו שיהא האדם מוכן לכבוד חמיו. - ויבאו האהלה, זה בית המדרש.
(7) (Exodus 18:7) "And Moses went out to his father-in-law": They said: There went out (also) Aaron, Nadav, and Avihu and seventy of the elders of Israel, followed by all of Israel. Other say: Even the Shechinah went out with them.
(8) "and he bowed down to him and he kissed him": I would not know who bowed down to whom or who kissed whom, were it not written (Ibid.) "And they greeted, a man, his neighbor, in peace." Who is called "a man"? Moses, as it is written (Numbers 12:3) "And the man, Moses, was exceedingly humble." It was Moses, then, who bowed down to his father-in-law and kissed him. From here they said that a man should be prepared for the honour his father-in-law. "and they came into the tent": the house of study.
(כד) וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע מֹשֶׁ֖ה לְק֣וֹל חֹתְנ֑וֹ וַיַּ֕עַשׂ כֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָמָֽר׃ (כה) וַיִּבְחַ֨ר מֹשֶׁ֤ה אַנְשֵׁי־חַ֙יִל֙ מִכָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיִּתֵּ֥ן אֹתָ֛ם רָאשִׁ֖ים עַל־הָעָ֑ם שָׂרֵ֤י אֲלָפִים֙ שָׂרֵ֣י מֵא֔וֹת שָׂרֵ֥י חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים וְשָׂרֵ֥י עֲשָׂרֹֽת׃ (כו) וְשָׁפְט֥וּ אֶת־הָעָ֖ם בְּכָל־עֵ֑ת אֶת־הַדָּבָ֤ר הַקָּשֶׁה֙ יְבִיא֣וּן אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה וְכָל־הַדָּבָ֥ר הַקָּטֹ֖ן יִשְׁפּוּט֥וּ הֵֽם׃ (כז) וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶת־חֹתְנ֑וֹ וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ ל֖וֹ אֶל־אַרְצֽוֹ׃ (פ)
(24) So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said. (25) And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. (26) And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves. (27) And Moses let his father-in-law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
