You are Rabbi Elazar ben Azaria
One of the teachers at Yavneh.
A Cohen, 10th generation in descent from Ezra the Scribe. (Talmud Yerushalmi 1:6, 3a-b)
Wealthy.
Very young – succeeded (for a while) Rabban Gamliel (Ber 27b and 28a)
A great Aggadist (story-teller…). So definitely somebody we would enjoy having at the Seder.
Rabbi Elazar ben Azaria (who lived 1st-2nd century CE), said:
Anytime our wisdom exceeds our good deeds, to what are we compared? – to a tree whose branches are numerous but whose roots are few; then the wind comes and uproots it and turns it upside down.... But when our good deeds exceed our wisdom, to what are we likened? - to a tree whose branches are few but whose roots are numerous; even if all the winds of the
world were to come and blow against it, they could not budge it from its place......."
