About Rav Hirsch on Torah
A German scholar, rabbi, and activist, Samson Raphael Hirsch (1808–1888) pioneered the Torah im Derekh Eretz school of contemporary Orthodox Judaism, a philosophy fusing Torah learning with secular study. Rav Hirsch’s commentary on the Torah, originally written in German, is renowned for its emphasis on the contemporary relevance of Judaism’s ancient narratives and its creative philological study of the roots of Hebrew words. The 1989 English translation of Rav Hirsch on Torah is made available on Sefaria by the Fleishman Foundation, dedicated in memory of Joel L. Fleishman.
About Joel L. Fleishman
Joel L. Fleishman (1934–2024) was a scholar, lawyer, teacher, philanthropic trailblazer, and Jewish communal leader who devoted his life to two intertwined callings: strengthening American civic society and opening Jewish life, in all its breadth, to deeper participation. He drew generations of students, colleagues, and friends into Jewish texts, traditions, and community through his love for and belief in them. For more than five decades, Joel taught at Duke University, founding what became the Sanford School of Public Policy. His books, including The Foundation: A Great American Secret, remain defining works on the practice and ethics of private philanthropy.
Joel believed that a rich Jewish life is rooted in texts and traditions — that the treasury of Torah, Talmud, and commentary is not an artifact of the past but a living guide to ethics, spirituality, and action in the present. He was a devoted student of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, returning to this commentary on the Torah weekly for over four decades. He went through multiple copies of the commentary, each time carefully noting on his copies his own thoughts.
The foundation he established in his parents’ names was built on a single animating purpose: to significantly increase the percentage of Jews leading lives grounded in Jewish traditions and texts, broadly construed. Sefaria is honored to further that legacy.
