About This Text

Author: Natan ben Yehuda
Composed:  c.1200 – c.1300 CE
Sefer HaMachkim is a summary and explanation of daily and holiday prayer services, including guidelines for prayer leaders. Written in the 13th century by Rabbi Natan ben Yehuda, it cites a number of earlier scholars, including the author’s father and great-grandfather, and is quoted frequently by later authorities. The author notes that he wrote it after being asked for an orderly guide to prayer, to better support the encounter with the divine.
