Composed: Troyes, France, c.1250 – c.1300 CE

Seder Troyes is one of several works composed in the medieval period in order to preserve communal customs despite persecution and expulsions. Written by Menachem ben Yosef, a second-generation chazzan (prayer leader), and edited by his student, Eliezer ben Yehuda, it contains ten chapters explaining the structure and content of daily prayers as well as prayers recited on Shabbat, holidays, and other occasions. Its traditions likely reflect the rulings of Rashi, leading Torah scholar in Troyes in the 11th century.
