About This Text

Author: Joseph Ibn Migash (Ri Migash)
Composed:  1100 – 1141 CE
Ri Migash on Bava Batra is a 12th-century analytical Talmud commentary by Spanish rabbi Joseph ibn Migash. The commentary encompassed at least half the tractates of the Talmud, but only the volumes on Bava Batra and Shevuot are extant in mostly complete forms. Ibn Migash’s interpretive style is distinct from that of many of his predecessors in its creative analysis, and he often suggests new conceptual frameworks for understanding talmudic concepts. The commentary and Ibn Migash’s other halakhic works greatly influenced Talmud study in Spain and Provence. They are quoted frequently in the writing of Rabbi Meir Abulafia, Ramban, and others.
