About This Text

Composed: Talmudic Babylon, c.450 – c.550 CE
Nazir is a tractate in Seder Nashim (“Order of Women,” which addresses family law). Its nine chapters discuss laws relating to the Nazirite, or one who vows abstinence from wine, haircuts, and ritual impurity generated from contact with corpses. Among the topics analyzed are different types of Nazirite vows and their implications, the sacrifices brought at the end of the fulfillment of a Nazirite vow, and cases of uncertainty with regards to a Nazirite’s purity status.
